Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry Nelson.
Hi Kerry, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Thank you for this opportunity to share my story! It’s an honor, and I’m excited for the impact that my story will make on fellow creatives.
Hi, my name is Kerry Nelson, I was born and raised in the beautiful Long Beach, CA. Photography for me started as an outlet back in High School; it was something I did to keep me off the street. During that time, my family was facing homelessness; we bounced from living in a local Motel 6 to living out of the car. My head was defiantly in the clouds as I knew those present circumstances wasn’t where I’d always remain. God had given me a gift and a dream, but I lacked the belief and motivation it took to execute.
It wasn’t until hitting rock bottom after the death of my Father in 2019 where my New Horizon Photography business was born. My mother said, ‘”Kerry, you got to get up! You’ve been living with me for three years, you don’t have to go, but you have to do something.”
So on my 29th birthday as a gift to myself, I launched my website. This was one of the hardest things I had to do, start a business from rock bottom. With God though, all things are possible!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been smooth sailing, comparison and self-doubt can be your biggest enemies. There were many times over the years where I wanted to hang up the camera. Keep in mind the name for my business came years ago, back in 2011; but I didn’t officially launch my business until 2022.
Throughout that time, I had to surround myself with other creatives who were not only further along in their journey but could also speak into my life. That’s very important on the days/moments where you feel inadequate etc., they can see the greater picture. Severing in my local church over the years also helped get me out of my shell and gain the confidence I needed behind the lens.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The name New Horizon Photography came about from the fact that each day brings a new horizon; the sky looks different at sunrise and sunset. What that means for us is fresh hope, new dreams, and always a chance to begin again.
New Horizon Photography seeks to create, connect, and inspire the next generation and other fellow creatives. The goal is to not only mentor the youth through the arts but to help other entrepreneurs/business build their brand. What sets us apart from others is our love for people. With that love, we can capture any given moment that tells a story.
For the hood needs better stories, and I’m glad to play a small part in our communities for generations to come.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, there was four of us and I was the “middle child”. Quiet, observant, and very athletic. I wasn’t the type of girl who played with dolls; I thrived when it came to sports and writing. Thank God for my elementary school teachers who introduced us to poetry. Though I was very athletic as a child, the only sport I was in in High School was Comedy Sports which is improv. That helped get me out of my shell!
