Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Hartford. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Dr. Kevin J. Hartford is the son of the late Junius Hartford, Jr. and the late Valerie Davis Hartford. He is the oldest of three children. Kevin is married to Makita Wells-Hartford. He is the father of Koyia, Kayla Allen, Darryl, Ma’Kayla and the late Keyron Ross, Jr. He is the very proud grandfather of 8. Kevin grew up in the Lower 9th Ward of New Orleans and graduated from Alfred Lawless Senior High School in 1997.
Kevin received his Master of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering and PHD in Organic Chemistry from the University of Washington. Following college, Kevin began working in his field. He has been employed as a Chemist with the U.S. Government, DOW Chemical and Exxon Mobil.
After years in the public and private sectors, Kevin decided in 2021 to explore entrepreneurship. He is currently the CEO of Kev Da Chemist LLC. and is currently working on product development. Kevin prides himself in not only being a Chemist to his clients but also in the education of products and business standards of product development. He believes he is a full-service, one stop shop. His clients can get products developed, trademarked, intellectual property registration, business start-up, marketing and product branding. And also coming soon is a chemistry summer camp for Kids. Lab #48 will open summer of 2024; it is dedicated to my son, Keyron who was a victim of gun violence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggle on my entrepreneurial journey, was my mother passed away and not even four days later, my youngest son was a victim of gun violence. My Mother was the reason I became a Chemist. And then I lost my son. I was one of his biggest supporters. Just before his passing, Kevin was anticipating his son receiving the college offer of his life to his one and only college choice, the University of Georgia. Following this devasting loss, it was hard to refocus on running a business. It took several months for him to even focus on chemistry again.

Dr. Kevin Hartford Words of advice for business owners
When building your own table please understand that you will have to add more space. There are three different stages to build a complete table.
1)Hustler stage: This is when it is just you and you alone the aggressively enterprising
2)Entrepreneur stage: This is when you’re going to need more space and chairs for a team. Because now you are the person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks. Having a great team will make it easier for you to focus on the day to day tasks.
3)BusinessMan or Woman stage: This is when you are at the head of the table with your team. Moving away from an entrepreneur role of investing time to build a model from scratch. To running a business based on an already successful model of their business.
So please take your time invest wisely and always remember that it will take a team to create a successful business.
