Today we’d like to introduce you to Kory Nichols.
Hi Kory, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sometimes I say I stumbled into fitness. After completing my MBA and working in finance at Delta, Home Depot, and the Federal Reserve, I took a break from my career to stay home with my young children. After a few years away from a traditional 9 to 5, I fell in love with strength training and was encouraged to pursue a coaching career. I started out working with one custom training client, and my business quickly grew. I now manage a custom training gym which has seen significant growth over the last few years. We’ve expanded our team from two staff members to eight and added a much larger second location in 2020. In addition to growing our in-person training business, I developed a virtual training service that allows busy professionals to maintain a consistent wellness routine despite travel and highly demanding work schedules.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
On the business side, one of the biggest struggles over the years has been managing the growing pains associated with small businesses. Maintaining a focus on our clients while also implementing systems that support expansion is tricky. Every decision must be carefully considered, but hesitation is also dangerous. So far, we’ve done well, and I’m optimistic about the future.
On a personal level, I face the same challenge our clients face– limited time. My husband and I have three children ranging from elementary school to high school. I manage a growing small business, and my husband has a demanding role at a biotech. We are no different from the clients at Smugs Fitness in our need to balance a long list of responsibilities while managing our own health and wellness. Because of this, I’m able to relate to our clients and develop programs that are manageable and realistic.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Smugs Fitness?
Smugs Fitness is a custom training gym that builds programs for each client based on their individual goals, injury history, and lifestyle. We take a big-picture approach to wellness and encourage stress management, sleep-quality, and nutrition education, in addition to strength-building. We train busy professionals, parents, young athletes, and retirees. We believe that movement builds both resilience and the strength needed for a long, independent life. Smugs Fitness offers both in-person training at our two Kirkwood locations and virtual training for clients across the country. We also build corporate wellness programs ranging from on-site fitness classes to single-session educational sessions.
