Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Clevenstine.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was trained in cosmetology and esthetics through Aveda in Ann Arbor back in 2006 and 2007. Over the next ten years, I gained experience and training working in different roles within the beauty industry and as my love for skincare grew, so did a passion for health and wellness. For years during that period, I suffered from eczema on and off until it got extremely bad 2016-2017. I felt like I had tried everything, including seeing other professionals and dermatologists, but nothing seemed to truly clear it up. I ended digging deeper and leaning into alternative ways to heal myself, which included Traditional Chinese medicine and the gut-skin connection. I have not had issues with my eczema since then, and I knew I wanted to continue supporting my skin with a more holistic approach. At the very end of 2021, I decided to start a new venture: working on my own out of the beautiful space at the Alpharetta Wellness Collective, an integrative health and wellness practice. There, I could allow my love of holistic health and beauty translate into what I do and the environment in which I work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This first year of business definitely came with a learning curve. I knew what to do with clients and in the treatment room, but learning how to run a small business and working for yourself is a little different! Overall though, I’ve learned a lot in a year, and I’m so glad I did it. I’m excited to see what this next year brings as I go in with even more knowledge and experience.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I offer a relaxing skincare experience in downtown Alpharetta, located within the Alpharetta Wellness Collective. As a holistic facialist, I enjoy integrating ways to nourish the body, mind, + spirit in my practice. I pull from Eastern modalities such as gua sha and facial cupping, but also love the results of Dermaplane, peels, and microneedling. I love helping clients at any age or stage look and feel their best with a natural approach.
I also provide professional skincare products curated from conscious companies. All of the lines I work with take extra steps to avoid harsh chemicals, parabens, and synthetic fragrances. They use high-quality ingredients that are sustainably sourced- but still potent, active, and nourishing for whatever stage of life you’re in. The companies I work with must practice responsible stewardship (sustainable, environmentally-friendly farms, fair trade, etc.) and have ingredients that make beneficial changes in the skin. For example, one of my lines is organic and so gentle for the skin and body that it’s oncology certified. Another line (also organic) uses a percentage of their profit for environmental initiatives that plant trees and remove plastic from the ocean. I want to carry skincare lines that really are conscious about both our bodies and the environment. My clients know these are the some of the things I look for with companies when they purchase from me.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Whatever your passion is or your favorite aspect of your work….. Follow that! Allow yourself to continue exploring it and building on it, and you will find you create a niche for yourself.
