Hidden Gems: Meet Marisa McKain of Bader Scott Injury Lawyers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa McKain.

Hi Marisa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
What most people know about me, is that I cannot be outworked! My work ethic and passion for helping people is what drives me. As the daughter of Cuban immigrants, growing up in the streets of Philadelphia, I knew that I wanted to help as many people as I could. I wanted to be that mentor and advocate that was not available in my community.

I am the Director of Workers’ Comp and a member of the Leadership team at a multi-million dollar law firm in Buckhead, Bader Scott Injury Lawyers. I am also a newly appointed Board member at the Bader Scott Foundation.

When people look at me, what they see is a person who is strong, focused, high energy, 15 years experience in Workers Comp law, determined, a coach, mentor, wife, mom, and one who is relationship-focused.

But what they may not know about me is that in 2005, I came to Atlanta after fleeing a toxic and abusive relationship. I had been struggling with depression, anxiety, and panic disorder.

As I dealt with the devastating impact of the end of my 20-year marriage, I decided that I would not see myself as a victim and that I had to do something positive to be a role model for my two young daughters.

I was lost, in a dark place and struggling for my life.

And because of going through those hard times, I am now a better person because of my commitment to be impactful in everything I do. I want to make a difference, I want to leave a legacy.

In 2007, I started as a legal assistant at a very large law firm in Atlanta with absolutely no experience in the legal field. I moved up in my role and at the time I left, seven or eight years later, I was a senior legal assistant and trainer.

In 2014, I wanted to grow my legal skills even further, so I went to work for a prior workers’ comp judge at another law firm where I learned higher next-level paralegal work.

After three years, I went to work at another law firm working as a senior workers’ comp paralegal. But I still knew I had an even higher calling, there was something more that I was supposed to be doing, a bigger purpose.

I reached out to Seth Bader at The Bader Law Firm. And after meeting with Seth, I immediately knew that the vision he had for his law firm and his passion for helping people, not only clients but his team as well, aligned with my own values and purpose.

In 2018, I was hired by The Bader Law Firm as a Senior Paralegal. There were only six legal assistants, including myself, at the firm at that time. What I quickly found was, that the more I helped develop and train my co-workers, the more the team’s morale went up and they produced at a higher level.

I developed a workers’ comp training program, provided oversight and management for the dept, and created operational procedures to streamline the current processes in order to move the business forward. Within two years, our department scaled from 6 people to over 30 team members.

Within two years at the firm, I was promoted to Director of the Workers’ Comp dept. I am grateful for Seth Bader and Luis Scott, owners of Bader Scott Injury Lawyers, for believing in me and challenging me every day to be a better servant leader.

As the Director of Workers’ Comp, I oversee the Workers’ Comp legal department which is made up of attorneys, legal assistants, captains, file clerks, medical records coordinators and case investigators. I accomplish this through accountability, developing and training our people and maintaining our culture.

I am still blown away at what I have been able to achieve. I am blessed and humbled for the Leadership position that I have today. I consider myself to be a servant leader. I say that because, it is very rewarding when I can be a part of my team’s personal and professional development and growth. I love what I do, and I love the people I get to do it with. My team is important to me and I am invested in their growth and the growth of the business.

I read a lot of books on leadership and relationship building. I attend legal and leadership seminars and conferences to further my own personal and professional development.

Self-motivation, hard work, commitment, patience, and relationship building, are the lessons I have learned through “my story”.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our client-centric law firm specializes in personal injury and workers’ compensation cases. Our firm has garnered an in-depth knowledge of all aspects of these areas of the law. This is of a great benefit to our clients. We understand what it means when someone is injured—whether that injury happens in a car accident, on the job, or in some other manner.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
It is important for leaders to take risks in order to find effective and innovative solutions to move the business forward. Risk-taking is a critical skill necessary to endorse organizational change and be ahead of the competition.

As a risk-taker, the key is to anticipate and accept the possibility of failure and despite this potential, still encourage innovation, creativity, and change. It is also important to include your team’s point of view and ask for their ideas and feedback. As a result of making them a part of the risk-taking plan, you will achieve a more motivated, loyal, and trustworthy team. I found that leaders who take risks provide a better experience for their people, which in turn provides a better experience for our clients.

I have taken many risks in my life, from moving to Atlanta alone with two young daughters and no family, to the decisions I had to make as a single mother, to knowing my value and going after my dream job.
