Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew and Sarah Bradford.
Hi Matthew and Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My husband has always loved to cook. When he moved to Anderson, he envisioned a burger spot that would make Anderson a destination. In 2020, he was inspired by the show “Home Town” to just go ahead and start something, to put money back into your own town. That’s how “Matty’s Pattys” started. Matty comes from Matthew. He was and is still called “Matty” by his family. The “Pattys” part comes from the smashburgers Matthew makes on the grill.
We were blessed by the brilliant Larry Luk and Olivia Phelan, who did an amazing job on our branding. We feel that it perfectly reflects the fun, vintage vibe we were going for.
Word of mouth seems like the fastest way news is spreading about Matty’s Pattys. We wouldn’t be here were it not for the community here in Anderson. We have dedicated followers, and we wouldn’t be where we are today were it not for their consistent support.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When we decided to go for a food truck in 2020, it took us about a year to write our business plan, gather investors, and find a bank that would give us a loan. Because of the pandemic, a lot of banks were not offering any type of food/beverage loan.
Once we found one, the biggest hurdle has been making sure all our paperwork is up to date and organized. There are many details to keep straight. Thankfully, we have been able to work with Kostas Ioannidis. He works for the South Carolina Business Development Center. It is a free resource to any business looking for advice. He has helped us with our financial projections as well as making sure we are profitable.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are a husband and wife team who serve the world’s most friendliest burgers!
Anderson is known not only as the Electric City but also as the Friendliest City! Our smashburgers bring friends and family together to laugh, share, and spend time together.
The three oz patty is smashed on a hot flat-top grill and is served on a toasted potato roll with house-made “#5 sauce”, grilled onions, and American cheese. The double, in my opinion, is the only way to order. The burger is served alongside some shoe-string fries. For dessert, we make our own 5 oz cookies from scratch. The chocolate chip has 60% dark chocolate that we hand chop to give it its distinct speckled look.
There is no other family-owned smashburger joint in Anderson. We believe in treating people the way we would want to be treated. When you visit the truck, we want you to feel like you’re a part of our family, Because when you eat the food we have prepared, you are family.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Matthew was surprisingly the pickiest eater! He would order fried chicken tenders at the local Mexican Restaurant, eat plain burgers and naked hotdogs. It was not until college that he started to branch out. But once he did, he never went back. He will eat almost anything now! Although, when we grab a hotdog from Costco, he still gets it naked.
I used to be an elementary teacher and welcomed all different kinds of students into my classroom. I had to stay organized and multitask all the time. These experiences come in handy when working Matty’s Pattys. The details normally get taken care of by me, and I am normally the one out front taking orders and chatting with customers for probably a little too long. 😉
It’s really fun working this business with my life partner. Of course, there is the occasional miscommunication or disagreement, but overall we make it work.
