Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Treglown
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After landing my dream job right out of grad school, I started thinking about what my new dream would be. The ultimate goal would be to own my own business, but that was a big risk, so I wasn’t sure when I would make it there. Then in 2023, over six years into my dream job, my life was flipped upside down. With a divorce, losing my mom, moving twice, and buying a home, and on top of all of this, my dream job was no longer where I felt I belonged.
I started seriously looking into owning my own business and what that would look like. With a ton of support from friends and family, I took the leap of faith.
Now, a year and a half into owning my business, I am so thankful I took that leap. It has given me the time I needed to recover from such a traumatic year, as well as spend more time with friends and family. Plus, I’m getting to continue doing what I love – supporting small businesses and non-profits through marketing and social media.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think you’ll ever find a business owner who will claim it has been a smooth road. My biggest challenges have been relaying what all I can do in the marketing and social media realm, as well as navigating owning my business and what that looks like.
While I do manage social media, I also create marketing materials, audit social media pages, provide content strategies, do one-on-one marketing strategy sessions, create Canva templates, have digital downloads, and so much more!
As someone who has never owned a business before, my business has definitely evolved over the last year and a half. Between learning what works and what doesn’t and just figuring out what all I needed to do as a business owner on the internal side, it has absolutely been a learning curve.
As you know, we’re big fans of MegTreg Collective. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The biggest thing to know is I help with social media and marketing. Whether it is needing marketing materials made or having someone completely take over your socials, I can do that! What sets me apart from others is my experience. For over six years, I worked in downtown development, specializing in marketing and social media, as well as small business development.
Over those six years, I learned a lot about what businesses struggle with, as well as what they need the most help with. I had firsthand conversations with business owners and was able to really understand how marketing and social media can benefit them.
Over those years I also worked within multiple non-profits. I see how funding is used and what those budgets look like, especially in smaller communities. In our area, we have the most non-profits per capita, so fundraising looks a lot different than in non-profits in metropolitan areas.
The biggest struggle both of those face is a small budget, so I strive to keep my prices attainable.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Discipline.
Working for yourself is such a drastic difference from working in an office setting, which is all I have ever known. While being disciplined is probably my weakness, I also know it is most important to be successful. I continuously try to improve what work looks like to me: where I work, daily schedules, what resources work best, etc.
