Hidden Gems: Meet Mia Monae of Monetic Skin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Monae.

Hi Mia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was a sophomore in high school, I started working on my skincare line. Belleza Vault was my previous company before Monetic Skin. Originally, I only made two skincare products. After I graduated from high school, I started focusing more on my business. It took a lot of research to find a manufacturer for my ingredients. After finding the appropriate products and working with the right company, I was ready to get started. Thanks to my mom, I was able to buy everything I needed. Since I taught myself how to design everything, I didn’t have to worry about hiring someone to do it for me. One day before I launched, I had a photoshoot. I worked all night on my site. I officially launched this year on January 1. I know I’ve worked really hard, and I still am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been easy. There were many times when I thought about quitting. When you love something, it keeps coming back to you. Over the last five years, I’ve started three businesses. When you’re not “famous” or “well known”, it’s pretty hard to get your business out there. I’ve had a lot of times just wondering whether or not I would make a sell.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I came up with the name “Monetic” from the word cosmetics, I just combined my middle name “Monae” into it. Monetic Skin is a vegan and cruelty-free skincare line made for any and all skin types. I know I’ve took my time with finding the right products. I’ve been working on this for the past three years. Anyone can start a skincare, but it’s about the fact I personally research every ingredient in my products to make sure it was good for the skin. I don’t have a team. So everything you see from social media to in person I work on by myself. I’m really proud to say I did this. My goal is to expand with having more products and to sell out of stores. Right now I’m having 14% your entire purchase until Feb. 14th.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope to be selling my products in stores like Sephora, Ulta, and in Target. For me personally, I’m trying to get into acting and screenwriting, so I hope you all will see me on tv soon. I’m also coming out with a clothing brand called Mimo Apparel. I don’t want to speak too much, but I pray you all see me everywhere soon!
