Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadya Dawson.
Hi Nadya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been a service-minded individual so I knew from a young age that no matter what career path I took up, genuinely helping people would have to be at the forefront.
This mindset led to the start of my nonprofit career in college. My first job was acting as a team member for a year long research project on adolescent substance abuse. I learned in abundance about the inner workings of addiction from interviewing hundreds of students and assisting them in their recovery journey.
Later, I went on to become a freelance grant writer and settled into a leadership position at a nonprofit servicing Georgia’s homeless populations. I provided financial literacy education, managed properties housing disabled individuals, and organized our homeless to homeownership programs. After the combination of a tragic fire in our office facility and the start of COVID though, I had to take a step back.
COVID left me at home alone and (probably more importantly) left me alone with my thoughts. I had more time than ever to really contemplate my next move in life.
That next move ended up being simpler than I thought. I wanted to do more of what I was already doing for the community, just on my own terms. So, I started a company: Oofy. I envisioned Oofy being a hub that connected individuals struggling to keep their life in order to people that could assist them make long-lasting changes.
After a pitching the idea on a call with professional organizer and now Co-CEO of Oofy: Sharea Dawson (also my sister-in-law!), we became business partners. We buckled down and learned all we could about running a business. We watched all the seminars, attended all the classes, read all the books we could find. We got our first clients/contracts and just, well, never stopped haha.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Oh, the struggle has been real. At time’s I felt like I was stuck in a series of unfortunate events.
Even before starting Oofy, I struggled with funding being cut from really impactful projects I was a part of, health issues popping up, a fire burning down my last place of work. Sheesh. I felt like I couldn’t catch a break.
After starting Oofy, much of my struggle was overcoming getting out of my comfort zone. As a neurodivergent individual, this was especially hard.
Thankfully, I’ve had people in my corner to support me. My wonderful and loving family, including my mom, dad, sister, and grandparents. My amazing Co-Ceo and sister-in-law that’s been with me every step of the way. And finally, my devoted husband who keeps me sane.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Simply put, Oofy gets your shit together and helps you keep it that way.
We are a life organization company in every sense of the word. Throughout my time conducting addiction research and serving homeless populations, I realized that when people had control over three key things – their time, their money, and their home – their quality of life improved exponentially. So those three facets of life are exactly what we specialize in.
Oofy offers monthly membership, one off services, training for business employees, and group services for non-profits. We also provide absolutely free full-length classes, courses, and resources.
I think what sets Oofy apart from other companies is our focus on education and one-on-one methodology. There’s a saying that “connection is the opposite of addiction”. We’ve built greatly off of this concept since much of the destructive behaviors people exhibit are habitual, almost mimicking addiction. Oofy provides individualized personal support with one-on-one coaching no matter what service you choose. Coaches are never incentivized by how long you stay a part of our service, but instead how fast your progress and learning is. For those who are tight on cash, we are especially proud of our far-reaching Oofy Opportunities program. This program allows individuals who cannot typically afford specialized services to receive them free or deeply discounted.
We’ve assisted countless people improve their lives. Students improving their time management skills in preparation for college, young couples figuring out their finances, previously homeless individuals learning to let go of hoarding behavior and find peace in an organized home.
Shit is hard out here. Don’t go at it alone if you don’t have to.
