Hidden Gems: Meet Porschia Fisher of New Purpose Counseling LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Porschia Fisher.

Hi Porschia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Entrepreneurship was not a foreign concept in my household it was modeled daily. Growing up, I watched my mother build and sustain her own business with determination, faith, and resilience. Observing her commitment to creating opportunities and serving others laid the groundwork for my own aspirations. Without fully realizing it at the time, I was absorbing the principles that would later shape my professional journey: vision, courage, discipline, and service.

That early exposure to entrepreneurship ignited a desire in me to build something meaningful, something that would extend beyond financial success and instead create lasting impact. As I matured, I recognized a consistent passion within myself: helping others navigate life’s challenges and discover their purpose. What began as a calling evolved into a career in mental health, and eventually into business ownership.

My path has not only been professional it has been deeply personal. Through the process of serving others, I have continually rediscovered myself as an individual, mother, wife, business owner, and woman of faith. Each role has refined my understanding of purpose. I have come to believe that our gifts and talents are not accidental; they are entrusted to us so that we may serve others and fulfill the work we are called to do.

In 2021, during a pivotal conversation with a friend who shared my vision, the idea for a private counseling practice took form. We envisioned a space that would provide quality, compassionate mental health services while also making a tangible difference in our community. From that conversation, New Purpose Counseling was born.

The name was intentional. At the core of our mission is the belief that every individual deserves the opportunity to identify and embrace their life’s purpose. Our guiding slogan “Every Heart Needs A Beat” captures that philosophy. To me, the phrase represents the reality that life’s hardships can make us feel as though our hearts have skipped a beat. Grief, anxiety, depression, relationship struggles, and life transitions can disrupt our rhythm. Yet healing is possible. With the right support, we can restore a steady, healthy heartbeat emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Building New Purpose Counseling has been both challenging and rewarding. I have been supported by a strong village of mentors, family, colleagues, and community members who encouraged my growth and believed in the vision. Their support reinforced an important truth: no legacy is built alone.

Today, as a Licensed Professional Counselor with over a decade of experience in the mental health field, I serve children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. My clinical focus includes depression, anxiety, life transitions, women’s issues, and relationship conflicts. My approach is warm, supportive, and goal oriented. I believe therapy should be a collaborative process one that empowers clients to reclaim their rhythm and move toward growth and transformation.

Looking back, I see how every stage of my journey prepared me for where I am today. From watching my mother build her business, to stepping into my own calling, to launching a practice grounded in purpose, each experience has shaped the foundation of the work I now do. Entrepreneurship gave me structure. Counseling gave me direction. Faith gave me clarity. Together, they formed the legacy I am building one heartbeat at a time.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While the vision for New Purpose Counseling was clear, the road to building it was anything but seamless. Like many entrepreneurs and particularly those entering the mental health field with a desire to serve underserved communities I encountered obstacles that tested both my confidence and my calling.

In the early stages of my career, I faced moments of self-doubt. There were seasons when the weight of responsibility, financial uncertainty, and professional expectations felt overwhelming. Starting out in the counseling field requires more than clinical knowledge; it demands resilience, patience, and an unwavering belief in your purpose. At times, I questioned whether I was equipped enough, experienced enough, or prepared enough to sustain the vision I carried.

Adding to that internal pressure were external voices of individuals who did not fully understand or believe in the path I was pursuing. Entrepreneurship can be isolating, especially when you are building something from the ground up. There were moments when skepticism from others forced me to confront my own insecurities. However, rather than allowing those doubts to derail me, I used them as motivation. I remained anchored in the belief that my purpose was greater than any temporary obstacle.

Financial challenges, the complexities of licensure, building a client base, navigating insurance panels, and learning the operational side of private practice were all part of the process. Graduate programs prepare clinicians to serve clients ethically and competently, but they rarely teach you how to run a business. I had to learn how to lead, market, manage systems, and make strategic decisions often through trial and error. Yet each setback became a lesson. Every closed door refined my resilience. Every mistake sharpened my clinical judgment. Every moment of doubt strengthened my faith.

Most importantly, the challenges deepened my empathy. Experiencing uncertainty firsthand enhanced my ability to sit with clients in their own seasons of struggle. I understand what it feels like to question your path. I understand the vulnerability of stepping into something new without guarantees. Those experiences did not harden me, they expanded me. They strengthened both my clinical competence and my personal character.

Has it been a smooth road? No. But it has been a purposeful one.

The obstacles were not detours; they were developmental milestones. They shaped me into a counselor who leads with compassion rather than judgment, with understanding rather than assumption. Today, when I tell clients that setbacks can be setups for growth, I speak from lived experience.

The journey has required perseverance, faith, and an unrelenting commitment to the community I serve. And in hindsight, the struggles were not barriers they were building blocks.

As you know, we’re big fans of New Purpose Counseling LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
New Purpose Counseling was founded with a clear and intentional mission: to help individuals rediscover purpose, restore emotional balance, and move forward with clarity and confidence. At its core, the practice exists to remind people that even when life feels disrupted, healing is possible. Our guiding principle “Every Heart Needs A Beat” reflects our belief that emotional wellness is essential to living a healthy, purposeful life.

We provide outpatient mental health counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. Our clinical specialties include depression, anxiety, life transitions, women’s issues, and relationship conflict. We also work with individuals navigating stress-related challenges, identity development, boundary-setting, and interpersonal dynamics. Whether a client is managing chronic anxiety, processing a major life change, or seeking healthier communication in their relationships, our approach is individualized and goal oriented.

What distinguishes New Purpose Counseling is the integration of clinical excellence with authenticity and purpose-driven care. Therapy here is not a one-size-fits-all model. We prioritize culturally responsive services, relational depth, and practical skill-building. Clients are not viewed through a diagnostic lens alone; they are seen as whole individuals with stories, strengths, and untapped potential. Treatment planning is collaborative, measurable, and structured to promote sustainable change, not just temporary symptom relief.

Another defining feature of our brand is accessibility and community impact. From the beginning, the vision was not simply to open a private practice, but to build a trusted mental health resource within the community. We are intentional about creating a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel heard without judgment and supported without stigma. Mental health services should feel approachable, not intimidating.

Brand-wise, I am most proud of the clarity of our message and the consistency of our mission. “Every Heart Needs A Beat” is more than a slogan it is a philosophy. It communicates that emotional disruptions are part of the human experience, but they do not define us. We help clients stabilize their “heartbeat” through evidence-based interventions, emotional regulation strategies, communication skills, and purpose exploration.

Our readers should know that New Purpose Counseling is rooted in compassion, professionalism, and empowerment. We are known for our warm, supportive presence combined with structured, goal-focused treatment. Clients often share that they leave sessions not only feeling heard, but equipped with tools, insight, and confidence to navigate life differently.
Ultimately, our work is about transformation. We do not simply address problems; we help people build healthier patterns, stronger relationships, and a clearer sense of direction. The goal is not dependency on therapy, but empowerment through therapy. New Purpose Counseling stands as both a service provider and a statement: healing is possible, purpose can be rediscovered, and every heart no matter how challenged deserves a steady beat.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For those who are just starting out whether in counseling, entrepreneurship, or both my first piece of advice is this: be clear about your “why.” Your purpose has to be stronger than your fear, stronger than public opinion, and stronger than temporary setbacks. There will be seasons when progress feels slow and doubt feels loud. If you are not anchored in why you started, it becomes easy to lose momentum.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that preparation and perseverance must coexist. Clinical competence is essential, but so is business literacy. If you are entering private practice, take time to understand operations, billing systems, marketing, compliance, and financial management. Graduate training equips you to treat clients ethically and effectively, but it does not always prepare you to run an organization. Invest early in learning the business side of your profession.

I also wish I had fully understood that growth takes time. In the beginning, it is easy to compare your Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 10. Building credibility, refining your niche, and developing confidence happens through lived experience not overnight success. Give yourself permission to evolve. You will refine your voice, your clinical style, and your leadership approach over time.

Another important lesson: not everyone will understand your vision and that is okay. Entrepreneurship and leadership often require you to believe in something before others see it. Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and a support system that challenges you, affirms you, and holds you accountable. Your “village” matters more than you realize.

I would also encourage new professionals to embrace setbacks as data, not defeat. When something does not work whether it is a strategy, partnership, or decision analyze it, adjust, and move forward. Every obstacle contains information that will strengthen your skill set and resilience.

Finally, remain authentic. In a field centered on human connection, authenticity is your greatest asset. Clients are not looking for perfection; they are looking for presence, empathy, and competence. Lead with integrity. Continue sharpening your clinical skills. Protect your boundaries. And prioritize your own emotional wellness as diligently as you encourage your clients to prioritize theirs.

If I could summarize what I wish I knew at the start, it would be this: the journey will stretch you but that stretching is necessary for expansion. Stay committed to your purpose, remain teachable, and trust that consistent effort compounds over time. The vision you carry is valid. Just give it the discipline and patience it deserves.
