Hidden Gems: Meet Praysha Spearman of Renew Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Praysha Spearman.

Hi Praysha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Before I knew I might become a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), I became passionate about anti-human trafficking efforts and began volunteering to raise money for survivors. Around that time, I began to imagine long-term ways I could help meet the needs of survivors. Ideas for safe housing flooded my thoughts, but I had no idea how to get started as a young college student.

In 2012, I was introduced to a graduate school for Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). I felt therapy might be a good way to help survivors long-term. After graduating with a Master’s in MFT in 2015, I immediately started working towards becoming a fully licensed therapist and started my private practice, Renew Therapy, LLC two years after graduation.

At first, I only saw clients who could travel to my Roswell office on Saturday mornings. At one point, I was working four part-time jobs simultaneously (a thrift store, my own private practice, an adolescent crisis center, and another therapist’s group practice). Needless to say, I learned quickly how to avoid burnout and overwhelm!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?

Overall, building Renew Therapy has been a smooth process. However, as a therapist, marketing has not been my strongest skill set! I once thought marketing was just an annoying car salesman skill. Now, I realize marketing does not have to be so shallow, and has since become more enjoyable, free-flowing and organic. Finding ways to build meaningful relationships with “mid-career professionals who long to show up authentically in the world, but struggle with feelings of inadequacy, especially after sexual trauma,” has been a lot easier to me than trying to share my skills and talents with “complete strangers who would have to be convinced that therapy is going to be worth their time and money!”

As you know, we’re big fans of Renew Therapy, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Since 2015, I have been honored to help mid-career professionals overcome long-standing issues of sexual trauma, grief/loss and suicide. As the years go on, my passion for helping clients only increases with time. Individuals, couples and families love the time-tested & proven interventions I use, such as Solution-Focused, Narrative and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy.

As of 2022, Renew Therapy began providing pro-bono services to Wellspring Living, an Atlanta-based non-profit transforming lives of men and women at risk or victimized by sexual exploitation since 2001. On my website, you will not find information about my pro-bono services. This is intentional! You will only find trauma-informed therapy for mid-career professionals. In the future, the connection between Renew Therapy’s premium fees and the amazing volunteer/pro-bono services that are helping human trafficking survivors here in Georgia will be more public information, but for now, I can say with gratitude that my business is moving in a direction I had no idea back in 2011 I would be going in.

The anticipation I feel regarding the future of Renew Therapy, LLC continues to build! Doors have opened for this business because there is a need for services that benefit survivors across the state of Georgia. Also, there are so many mid-career professionals who are talking more about the aftermath of sexual trauma, and demand is high for effective, compassionate care, even on a completely virtual platform.

The reader of this article could very well be the strongest person in their circle of family & friends, but their superman/superwoman cape won’t be necessary if they come to see me for therapy. I look forward to hearing more about what might be bringing them into therapy and how I might be able to be a support for them.

What makes you happy?
I’m most happy when I am living in the present moment with people who care about me just as much as I care about them. My faith and family have been a constant source of joy, peace and happiness in my life. I’ve enjoyed being able to explore my surroundings no matter where I am- a historic downtown area, a wooded forest, walking in my neighborhood, or visiting another country! Traveling, laughing with my husband, friends and family, celebrating holidays, or hosting a game night are all things that continue to fill my life with happy memories!
