Today we’d like to introduce you to Rheitta Ohene Amoako.
Hi Rheitta, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Edible Education started as one of the after school clubs at Learning Hive
Learning Hive was established in 2013 offering early learning, preschool, afterschool and summer camp enrichment for school age children. The core of the Learning Hive curriculum has always been a focus on hands-on learning experiences for children. Cooking and more recently gardening are incorporated into the activities at the centers.
After a years offering cooking activities using random recipes found on the internet, I was on a search for a more structured cooking curriculum, designed for children to include in the after-school club offerings. After much research she stumbled on the Kitchen ala Carte through a third-party vendor in 2019, which led her to the Edible Education Educator training program. In May 2020, Chef Ann Butler(Founder of Edible Education) and her team travelled to Atlanta to take me and my team through a two day intensive training on the Edible Education Curriculum. The following month my team and I travelled to Virginia to get first hand training at the Edible Education headquarters in Midlothian, and also got a tour of the factory where the Kitchen ala Carte is manufactured.
After many conversations with Chef Ann and her team, what started as an afterschool club, then extended into a school holiday and summer camp program has grown to the first stand alone Edible Education location in Georgia.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
We have had our fair share of struggles being a new business. Working with a shoestring budget to open a brick and mortar business came with many challenges. From getting the proper permits, getting the building to meet all the necessary city/county codes, to marketing and getting the word out has been a process. We are constantly working on the marketing piece.
There is also finding the right team members who not only have a passion for cooking but also love working with children.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Edible Education we create learning experiences that directly impact students’ success in life. We are on a mission to get kids excited about preparing real food via our cooking classes, camps, birthday parties, and more!
Our high-quality hands-on enrichment programs are an important part of educating the whole child. Activities are carefully designed to extend learning outside the classroom. Each class is led by experienced professionals, who have a passion for impacting the next generation of leaders in their sphere of influence.
Besides our comprehensive cooking and etiquette programs, we offer a variety of activities that teach children the skills needed to stand out in today’s world.
We immerse our young chefs in a world of culinary creativity! In addition to developing cooking skills, our classes integrate the following elements: math, reading, science, cultural awareness, teamwork and collaboration.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
As a business owner, I have learned not be afraid to ask for help. Someone has been on this path longer, has skills and knowledge that can shorten my learning curve. Not everyone will be willing to help, but that should not stop me. Keep asking, keep knocking, stay curious. I’m intentional about seeking out mentors who are not just experienced, but also align with my values.
