Today we’d like to introduce you to Rita Avant.
Hi Rita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began Cake-a-Rita unintentionally with me deciding to make cupcakes for a math project. I baked up some cupcakes and used candies and sprinkles to show things such as radius and diameter. I decided on cupcakes to showcase my project opposed to the typical power points and poster boards because I’ve always liked being different and I also always try to look for opportunities to showcase my creativity with things that may not be not so fun to me otherwise.
Although I didn’t intend for me to continue baking, word did get around school pretty quickly and I began to receive custom requests for more cupcakes. My baking cupcakes became a daily thing and I became known as the “cupcake girl”. As much as I enjoyed baking cupcakes, I wanted a bit more of a challenge and to see how far I could push my newfound skills. This is when I decided to make a friend’s birthday cake just to see if I could. The cake turned out better then either my friend or I expected and this sparked my interest to dig deeper into the cake community.
Ever since that day I baked my first cake, I never stopped searching for different ways to make different cakes. As of now, I’ve been perfecting my craft for ten years. Within these ten years, I’ve created a job for myself by building my business step by step. During this time, I’ve grown tremendously in my skill level, I’ve connected with hundreds of people and made hundreds of cakes. Everyday I am thankful that I get to spend my days doing something that I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Running any type of business is anything but easy. There’s so much leg work that has to be put in before you get to the good part of creating your product or providing your service. You have to keep up with the maintenance of your website and social media, talk to clients, schedule bookings, create invoices, etc.
Running a business requires so much of your attention that a regular 9-5 typically doesn’t require. Although the road to entrepreneurship isn’t the smoothest and it’s the road less traveled, I wouldn’t give up my position for anything less and I’m happy with the freedom that I’m able to provide for myself.

Cake-a-Rita specializes in custom cakes and other sweet treats. Our cakes are most known for their moist texture and signature glitz and glitter design.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has been great to me ever since I began my cake business journey. I believe that when you’re aligned with your life’s purpose, you’ll receive all the luck that you need. Luck also requires you to be open to receiving what it has to offer, and when you’re willing luck will put you in every situation you’re meant to be in to move one step forward to your ultimate goal every time.
