Hidden Gems: Meet Robert Herring Iii of Herring + Handy DBA Hung Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Herring Iii

Hi Robert , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, the story starts with me chronicling my steps for mounting my television in my loft apartment off of 14th street in the fall of 2017 on Instagram. Those DIY stories ginned up interest in the process, in addition to my skillsets, which I didn’t realize were in demand or not within most people’s wheelhouse. My father – was a weapons specialist in the USAF, & he used to kit next gen aircraft with weapons and maintenance the jets; on the home front, tools were readily accessible to the entire family – almost as routine or banal as flatware. They were some of my first instruments of use when it came to my penchant for conceptualizing, creating, or constructing. I was a super imaginative kid that became an adult who still has a passion for learning & conquering new methods & mediums. Whether it was drawing, writing, singing, planning, strategy, or all the way to moving to Atlanta for Graduate studies at SCAD in apparel construction – messing up a blank slate to create something that wasn’t there before, & learning something new in route, is pretty much my thing. Friends & onlookers started asking what I’d charge to come mount their TVs, to which I’d respond, “you….you can’t mount your own?” & thus – Hung Atlanta was born. A catchy bit of provocative marketing for the DBA, Herring + Handy as the corporate auspices, & I’ve grown from figuring out everything I could hang, from televisions to light fixtures to wallpaper, & eventually graduated to custom woodwork, aesthetics consultation, & aims of attending GA Tech to pursue a Masters in Construction Management among other things. Along the way, I’ve collaborated with various interior firms, other contractors, & a slew of small business owners, creating this network – an ecosystem of creatives, clients, & community that’s platformed me to & for this moment, & beyond.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some days, it doesn’t feel like I own a small business, but the inverse. I belong to it, to my clients, to the brand. Some days, it’s incredibly filling, & others, it feels like I barely belong to myself. So, it’s finding that balance, delighting in finding that razors edge, riding that lightening bolt. I get to leave people’s residences & businesses better, to give this spaces more identity, & I’m finally ready to began imparting what knowledge I can on whatever team congeals under Herring + Handy’s corp umbrella. Like anything – it’s peaks & valleys, getting your wings in the fall – learning all the day to day minutia of running a business, generating leads, managing inventory, protecting your revenue stream, while staying committed to the communities & bigger causes you serve & represent.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to say I started with hanging TVs & evolved to niche aesthetics. The TV piece has even grown presentation wise with the flood of Covid/WFH & TikTok DIY options & whimsical machinations – so, even that isn’t as straight fwd anymore. Beyond that, I do a lot of accent walls, whether it’s paint, wallpaper, or wood accents like wainscoting, shiplap, etc. I do light plumbing, low volt electrical, some landscaping, assembly of all sorts, window treatments, etc. To date – I’m a one stop shop, it’s just me, which is why this moment represents a sort of inflection point, & it’s time to expand the brand to other specialists.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Treating people like people, making sure they feel seen, & working tirelessly to make sure their ideas are an even more brilliant & satisfying reality,
