Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaneice White.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Ms. Shaneice White. My passion lies deep within children and education. Becoming an educator had always been a dream of mine since I was five years old. After graduating from high school, I went on to attend San Diego State University, where I earned my BS in Child and Family Development with additional studies in Cultural Proficiency and Counseling/Social Change. During my time at San Diego State University, I had the amazing opportunity to study abroad multiple times (Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Mexico). These experiences interacting with children from different parts of the world truly opened my eyes and expanded my heart. I knew from that point on that I would impact not only my community, my country, but the world! One week after graduation (2019), I moved across the country to Atlanta, GA I moved to begin my dream of becoming an elementary school teacher. working with Teach For America.
Today, I am currently teaching second grade in Clayton County. Within the past two school years, I’ve had the opportunity to teach and establish bonds with over 100 scholars. Teaching isn’t just a “job” to me, it is my calling! In addition to serving as a teacher, I am the English Language Arts/Social Studies Department Content Lead for K-2nd grade and a full-time student at Grand Canyon University, pursuing my M.Ed in Elementary Education. Yes, I’m a busy woman, but I love what I do! As an educator, my main objective is to help close the achievement gap in education I believe that I can help by building literacy and by incorporating social and emotional learning (SEL) into my daily instruction. Each one of my scholars leave my class eager to read and hold a sense of belonging. In September of 2020, I began creating literacy projects. From my experience, I know that our black and brown communities need more positive representation around. One of the most powerful forms of representation comes in books, which is why I decided to become a children’s book author. Please follow my journey as I continue to use my gift of resilience, determination, and passion to empower young minds, the future of our nation!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth? My life story could be turned into a published book! My life has been filled with ups and downs, but I pride myself on being resilient. My family has always been there for me to motivate me to keep going when times get hard. My grandmothers would always tell me “God didn’t bring you this far to leave you here, so keep pushing.” Saying positive words of affirmation and talking to God has really helped me overcome my most recent challenges. At the end of the storm comes a rainbow. I will keep pushing because I know that God has a plan for me and my journey has just begun.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
During my free time, I have started writing children’s books. My first published book is called “Black Girls Make Magic.” About “Black Girls Make Magic”: Destiny is a young girl filled with vigor and love for herself! But just because she is vibrant and full of life does not mean that she’s never faced adversities in life. However, Destiny always manages to persevere and remain positive because of the wisdom that her mother sheds. And most importantly, she knows how to use the affirmations to get her through life’s obstacles. Witness how Destiny uses affirmations in this endearing story of self-love! My book is available online via Amazon, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and in local book stores around Metro Atlanta. I have plans of expanding my business by offering more children’s books, character apparel, dolls, and more. Stay tuned, because the expansion will be BIG!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love ATL! I love how there is always something fun to do. The thing that I dislike about ATL is the traffic!
