Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheryl Henderson.
Hi Sheryl, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Birmingham, AL in a two-parent home with me being the youngest of four siblings. Both parents had a very strong work ethic with a huge emphasis on education. Therefore, college was expected immediately after high school and quite naturally I fell in line.
With the guidance of my mother, I went into Health Administration while working call centers full time. However, I couldn’t deny the feeling of mediocrity. I understood that I was walking into a field that provided “job security” but didn’t feel passionate or spiritually led to follow such a path. My mother, being the God-fearing woman she was, raised us to seek God in everything we do. With that said, I moved to Georgia in 2008.
I moved to Decatur, GA with a purpose, but not necessarily a plan, but I was determined to succeed. With $200 in my pocket and two kids in tow, I made the transition. I did lean on friends upon my arrival but was able to secure a job within two weeks of my move and a new apartment within five weeks.
I immediately went back to what I knew – call centers and college. I subconsciously fell back into the learned behavior of work and school. After three years, I was tired of the complacency, long hours of work, and time away from my boys who were still adjusting to a new state and being away from family. I knew it was time for a change and if I didn’t take that first step, I would make excuses for the rest of my life.
I immediately begin writing a business plan to begin my professional journey into an industry that I was not only passionate about but familiar with – beauty and hair. However, I didn’t want to just sell hair, I wanted to form a presence in an industry where brown women were the largest consumers but not the pioneers. From that idea, passion, and desire came Dynamic Beauty and Supply, LLC.
Being a business owner with little to no experience came with its challenges and a lot of trial and error, I was eager to embrace those challenges but not well prepared. After a year and a half of solely running my business, I returned to the job market and nine to five grind. Although I intended to operate my business while simultaneously working a job and being a mother, those expectations proved to be unrealistic.
In 2017, my mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. The disease had been lying dormant, making it difficult to treat. Nonetheless, we prayed and remained positive through each treatment and doctor’s appointment, I showed strength for my mother and children, but secretly I was scared. I was scared to lose my mother. I feared knowing life without her – she was truly my best friend. One of the greatest motivators to succeed was my dear mother and the desire to take full care of her and my father, as they had me. I begged God to give me more time with her, to please allow her to see me fulfill my purpose, to watch her grandchildren, and continue to be the very glue that held our family together.
In July 2019, my mother succumbed to breast cancer and in December 2019, my father passed from what you might call “a broken heart”. I took a mental break to grieve and adjust to my new normal of not having parents. However, my parent’s spirits wouldn’t allow me to stay in a state of depression. I channeled every bit of strength I had to complete the task of relaunching my business, as my mother and I had discussed on numerous occasions. She and my father were my biggest supporters and always believed that it was my calling.
It has been over a year since my relaunch, and Dynamic Beauty and Supply, LLC has reached levels that I thought were unattainable in 2012. My dreams of having a full-scale online beauty and supply store have come full circle – with shapewear, skincare, haircare, and cosmetics now being a part of our growing inventory. I am no longer just a hair distributor – I am a brand!
I owe this success to God and the spirit of my parents – they continue to motivate and support me from beyond the grave. Although they are not physically present, they have been here to witness every stage of my growth both personally and professionally!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Relocating to another state with young children and a lack of family support was one of the scariest experiences as a young mother. It was a challenge having to work long hours with limited to no sitter at times and limited resources.
I still face the challenges of navigating through my adult life with no parents to call for direction.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Dynamic Beauty and Supply LLC is an online beauty and supply store. We provide everything from raw Indian/Brazilian hair, mink magnetic eyelashes, natural skincare products, organic hair care products, and shapewear. My vision was to design and provide products to enhance one’s natural beauty while making each customer feel dynamic in his/her own way.
It was extremely important for me to offer products that can reach consumers of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. This year I incorporated ayurvedic skin and hair care to introduce an ancient holistic approach to the way we address acne, aging, and hair loss.
I currently have a presence on Amazon, Etsy, and my very own website but look to raise brand awareness by doing popup shops in various states.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was extremely outgoing, inquisitive, and creative as a child. I am pretty sure I would have been a TikTok sensation if we had access to cellphones and apps during my childhood.
I always had a passion for reading and writing. I can remember spending my free time reading the dictionary at a very young age. My motivation was not only to broaden my vocabulary but, wow my teachers with large words that kids my age couldn’t pronounce, let alone understand the meaning of.
My desire to be an overachiever didn’t always go over smoothly with my peers but did get me recognized as the winner of a few spelling bees.
