Hidden Gems: Meet Summer Moss of Kinky Twisted Coils, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Moss.

Hi Summer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the beauty industry for over a decade, and my journey started with a simple love for styling hair and helping women feel their best selves. In 2015, I opened my first salon, Kinky Twisted Coils, formerly known as Summer’s Hair Boutique, and what began as a small dream quickly grew into a space where natural hair could be celebrated and cared for. Over the years, I’ve expanded into workshops like Braiding for Beginners, Love Your Hair, and Daddy’s Girl. I have dabbled in some product development such as a hair oil, which I plan to re-launch soon, and I’ve been the lead stylist on many sets styling for film and bridal parties. Today, my business is about more than hair, it’s about community, education, and creating experiences that empower people to feel and look their best through free expression of hair.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely had and has its struggles. As a mother of two young boys, one of my biggest challenges has been balancing home life with the demands of running a business. There are days when I feel stretched thin, trying to be fully present as a mom while also being committed to my clients and my vision. On top of that, I’ve had to navigate financial struggles, learn business systems, and push past self-doubt. One of the hardest parts has been tuning out outside voices and distractions, and not letting them shake my drive as a salon owner. But every obstacle has taught me resilience, discipline, and how to refocus on why I started this journey in the first place.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Kinky Twisted Coils, I create a safe, welcoming space for people to embrace their natural hair journey. I specialize in protective styles, micro and traditional locs, twists, and natural hair education. What I’m known for is not just doing hair, but teaching by helping parents learn how to care for their children’s hair, guiding new naturals, equipping anyone with braiding skills, and empowering clients to feel confident about their crowns.

I’m also the founder of Summer On Set, where I bring that same passion for healthy styling to the world of film, bridal, and on-location projects. Being part of someone’s wedding day or contributing to a film set is such a rewarding way to share my gifts.

What sets my brand apart is that it’s rooted in both creativity and education. I want readers to know that my work goes beyond the salon. I’m building a brand that teaches, uplifts, and inspires confidence through all the Kinks, Twists, and Coils.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Having grown up here, what I love most about Stone Mountain is the richness of the community and the pride people have in calling this place home. My salon is part of that fabric, and I love seeing neighbors support neighbors. What I like least is that we still have areas that need more growth and attention—better resources for small businesses, more partnership, and more programs for our youth. I truly believe we can get there if we continue building together.
