Today we’d like to introduce you to Takerian Jordan.
Takerian, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a loctician and my journey started when I got my first set of locs back in 2011. I started to youtube how to do it myself but only out of convenience because I was on the basketball team and I wasn’t able to get to a stylist every time my hair looked out of whack. When I got the hang of it a couple of months in I’d take my clips to school with me and do my hair in class every now and then just so people could see that I could do locs and hopefully ask me to do their hair. Eventually, it caught on and I built a small clientele in my hometown. I soon after graduated and signed a basketball scholarship to Albany State University but I quit my sophomore year; got a job and started back doing locs heavily since I was now in a somewhat bigger city and on a college campus. I went to get my hair done in 2016 at a salon and somehow, the people there had saw my posts on social media before and greeted me with love and actually offered me an opportunity but I had made Assistant Production Manager at my job. I literally didn’t have time plus I was scared to make that jump. A few weeks went by and the owner at my job came in and let us go to cut costs. With that piece of information, I went to back to the salon and talked with the owner, got my spot then went to the nearest hair store with my last check to load up on hair products. I now have my own salon suite and have had the opportunity to bless and connect with some great people. Since 2016 I have only been employed by myself and have had the opportunity to employ up to 2 people at once. Small steps but GIANT rewards along the way.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
My journey has actually been pretty smooth. The hardest thing you’ll ever come into contact with is yourself when being an entrepreneur. Finishing my degree in criminal justice while balancing 4am mornings or 11pm nights at the shop may have seemed like a lot but I enjoyed every bit of it. Being young and impulsive had me working a little harder than I had to now that I think about it. Transitioning from different shops because my business was growing so rapidly was the second hardest thing due to the fact that you form relationships with the people in-shop. Growing together forms a strong bond but they always encourage further growth beyond them.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Slice Life is home of a detailed loctician who specializes in starter locs, loc maintenance, repairs, reattachments, reconstructions and much more. Making sure each client is satisfied in their own way. I’ve learned that clients can’t be handled the same way from greetings to products used. Connecting with every client and potential client from the first time we talk is important because the journey with your loctitian is intimate. You don’t want just anyone asking you health questions and standing over you for possible hours. I am proud of the growth of my brand and the fact that I’ve had the opportunity to be paid to travel and do what I love which just happens to be locs. Dropping my natural hair care line called “Prized Possession” with anti-itch properties was also a highlight on this journey.
I also double as a Certified Personal Trainer. Helping people look and feel their best is what fuels me.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
