Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara L Moore.
Hi Tamara, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Sixteen years ago, Scattering Resources was born from the compassionate heart and faith of my late grandmother, Philomene Homere. Her love for people, her commitment to service, and her deep concern for others shaped the foundation of this organization long before it had a name. In September 2008, she shared heartbreaking news that several of our extended family members and close friends in Northern Haiti had lost their homes due to devastating mudslides and landslides following multiple hurricanes. While our loved ones survived, many others did not, and her pain became my call to action.
As an American of Haitian and Dominican descent raised in Boston and Atlanta, I had never witnessed destruction caused by merciless winds or engulfing mudslides. Hearing my grandmother’s voice filled with worry and compassion led me to ask a life-defining question: what would I want someone to do for me if I lost everything? Despite the twelve-hundred-mile distance between Atlanta and Haiti, my grandmother, mother, and I gathered clothing and supplies and made a plan to send help to those in need.
Through this experience, I quickly learned how difficult and expensive it was to ship individual items. Wanting to do more, I devoted my time to researching better ways to support families like mine. I discovered that bulk shipping was more economical and impactful. By packing large containers with donated clothing, hygiene items, and school supplies, we could reach more people in a shorter amount of time. That’s when I realized this effort was bigger than a single response. Through prayer and faith, I felt God calling me to turn compassion into a mission.
Inspired by Proverbs 11:24, Scattering Resources was officially founded in October 2009. What began as a response to urgent needs in Haiti soon expanded to serve communities in the Atlanta area, other parts of the United States, and the Caribbean. Donations grew quickly, volunteers stepped in, and my guest bedroom filled with containers of supplies. My grandmother’s example continues to guide the organization, not only in giving, but in mentoring others and teaching people how to serve with purpose and compassion.
In January 2010, a catastrophic earthquake struck Haiti, claiming hundreds of thousands of lives and displacing millions. Scattering Resources responded immediately, and we were on the ground delivering essential supplies and partnering with local leaders. In April 2010, I traveled to Haiti alongside Dr. Didi Saint-Louis, a Haitian-American board-certified OB/GYN, to assess needs firsthand. We provided medical supplies to Bernard Mews Hospital, supported an orphanage, and partnered with Food For The Poor-Haiti to ensure aid reached those most impacted.
Over the past sixteen years, Scattering Resources has served more than 10,000 underserved individuals through hygiene programs, clothing distribution, school supplies, disaster relief, and career and financial workshops. With the support of volunteers, college students, board members, and community partners, we work to meet immediate needs while preserving dignity and empowering individuals and families to move forward. Each initiative reflects my grandmother’s belief that service should be personal, intentional, and rooted in love.
Throughout this journey, I’ve also maintained a sixteen-year career in corporate America while nurturing what I consider my greatest ministry, my eleven-year covenant marriage to my amazing husband, Jerome W. Moore. I’m grateful to have earned a degree in Marketing Management and humbled to have recently received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy Humanitarian Degree (Ph.D., Hon.). Along with program management experience, these opportunities allow me to serve with excellence and continue the legacy my grandmother planted in my heart.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many nonprofits, securing consistent funding while growing programs responsibly has been one of our biggest challenges. Building with limited resources required learning as we went and often doing more with less. Those moments pushed me to be more intentional, creative, and rooted in our mission. While there were seasons of exhaustion and uncertainty, my faith kept me grounded, and every challenge strengthened my leadership and reaffirmed why this work matters.
As you know, we’re big fans of Scattering Resources, Inc.. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My work is rooted in service, leadership, and creating pathways for people and communities to thrive. As the Founder and Executive Director of a nonprofit, my role goes beyond management. I’m actively involved in developing programs, building partnerships, mentoring others, and teaching people how to get involved and lead with purpose.
This work is part of fulfilling the calling God placed on my life, to serve, to teach, and to leave a meaningful impact for future generations. What motivates me most is seeing real change, families supported, individuals empowered, and communities strengthened. It’s demanding work, but it’s deeply fulfilling.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe faith, preparation, and discernment play a greater role than luck. Many of the opportunities we’ve experienced came through relationships with people who believed in the mission and were willing to support, guide, or open doors at the right time. What once felt like setbacks often revealed themselves as lessons or protection, helping us grow stronger and stay aligned with our purpose.
