Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammie Philips.
Hi Tammie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Twenty years ago, I found myself at a crossroads. I was a newly single mother of two children, facing the uncertainty of starting over after divorce. With no safety net and everything on the line, I knew I had to create a career that could not only support my family, but also give me the independence and stability we deserved.
I chose to enter the insurance industry — a field where very few women were represented at the time, and where success was never guaranteed. With determination, long hours, and a deep commitment to serving clients with honesty and care, I laid the foundation for my own brokerage firm.
The early years were filled with challenges — building trust, competing in a male-dominated industry, and learning the business from the ground up. But every obstacle pushed me to work harder, think smarter, and stay true to my mission: helping others protect what matters most to them.
Today, two decades later, I am proud to own and operate a thriving insurance brokerage that I built completely from scratch. What started as a way to provide for my children has grown into a respected business that supports not only my family, but also my clients, team members, and community.
My story is proof that perseverance, faith in yourself, and a willingness to keep moving forward can turn struggle into strength — and dreams into reality. As a woman entrepreneur, I hope my journey inspires others, especially women facing their own crossroads, to believe that they, too, can build something lasting and successful from the ground up.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
• Financial strain – starting a business with no investors, no family wealth, and no safety net meant every dollar counted, and failure was not an option.
• Skepticism in a male-dominated field – walking into rooms where I wasn’t taken seriously forced me to work twice as hard to prove myself and gain respect.
• Balancing motherhood and business – building a career while raising two children alone often meant late nights, early mornings, and sacrifices that most never saw.
• Learning from the ground up – without mentors or a ready-made blueprint, I had to teach myself the ins and outs of running a business, one challenge at a time.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about TAMMIE PHILIPS INSURANCE GROUP?
My company is an independent insurance brokerage that I built from the ground up over the last 20 years. We specialize in providing tailored insurance solutions for individuals, families, and businesses — with a particular expertise in general contractors, artisan contractors, workers’ compensation, general liability, bonds, commercial auto, payroll solutions, equipment coverage, and excess liability.
What sets us apart is our commitment to service and relationships. We don’t just sell policies — we take the time to understand each client’s unique needs and challenges, then design coverage that truly protects what matters most. Our clients know they can pick up the phone and get personal, honest guidance every time.
We’re also proud of the fact that we’ve built a reputation in industries that can be tough to navigate. Contractors and small businesses often face hurdles when it comes to securing coverage, and we’ve become a trusted resource for helping them protect their livelihood while staying compliant and competitive.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust and respect we’ve earned over the years with all our carriers. Our personal branding reflects professionalism, stability, and integrity — the same values that have guided us from the beginning.
At its heart, our firm is about more than insurance. It’s about empowerment — giving business owners the peace of mind that comes with knowing they’re protected, so they can focus on growing their dreams.
That’s what I want readers to know: we’re not the biggest, but we are among the most dedicated. We treat our clients like family, and that’s what has allowed us to grow from a one-woman operation into a thriving firm serving clients across many sectors.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Over the years, I’ve learned that success isn’t just about hard work — it’s also about constantly growing, learning, and surrounding yourself with inspiration.
I follow a few entrepreneur and leadership blogs, but honestly, my biggest inspiration comes from connecting with other business owners and learning from their journeys as well as staying close to my family, particularly my father for guidance and of course God!
My resources have helped me grow not just as a businesswoman, but as a mother, leader, and individual. They keep me grounded, motivated, and always looking forward.
