Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanequa’ Clark.
Hi Tanequa’, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At 11 years old, I practiced braiding hair on one of my younger cousins hair. Over time growing up, one of my older cousins made me his “permanent hair braider”. He always wanted the Allen Iverson fishbones. (Very popular in the early 2000’s). As I got older and moved to Savannah, Ga, I became one of the “neighborhood braiders”, because I wasn’t the only one. But I was one that did cornrows. As I got older, I knew doing hair was a dream of mine until I got carpal tunnel at the age of 21, and I put that dream behind me. Moving forward, as Covid began and being out of work, I used braiding hair and retwisting locs as a way to still be able to receive income. In the process of “starting over and reviving myself”, I started my business “A Touch of Brandy”. Since the growth and evolution of my business, I elevated from serving clients at my in home studio to working professionally from a shop. My work has taken an undeniable increase in positive recognition.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The obstacles I dealt with getting back into braiding was a little difficult. Being a braider with carpal tunnel, you don’t want to over-extend yourself and not be able to do the work. So, I had to learn what would and could be good for me to offer to others. From learning different hair types to new products to pricing for the styles offered, was the icing on the cake. More so, I had to learn the people. Not every client is the same. Some require more than others. And that’s something I had to understand to accommodate what they needed.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
A Touch of Brandy, LLC specializes in braids, faux locs, crochet, locs/loc maintenance, ponytails, & kids braids. My business is personal to me. It isn’t just about doing hair. It’s about the feeling you walk away with. I want you to experience a touch of great customer service, a great conversation, and great environment. But I also want you to leave knowing I put a smile on your face, with confidence of returning. I am most proud of how far I’ve become and haven’t given up on myself. I’m even more proud of the amount of people who don’t know me and still gave me a chance to receive quality work.
