Hidden Gems: Meet Taylor Garcia of A Tayste for Life

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Garcia.

Taylor Garcia

Hi Taylor, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My story starts in Little Rock, Arkansas where I was born and raised. The 1994 HBO documentary, “Bangin’ in Little Rock” paints the landscape of the neighborhoods where I grew up. Getting out of the city and seeing the world was always a dream of mine and, after college, I decided to teach in the Dominican Republic for one year.

My career as a classroom teacher spanned several cities: Salcedo (Dominican Republic), Miami, Florida, and Little Rock, Arkansas. My entire career has been in the public sector, doing work that helps people is where I find the most gratification. I started A Tayste for Life because I wanted a platform where I could share lessons learned – from working in education and being a parent.

My newsletter focuses on ways that parents/caregivers can support their K-12 students in ways that will set them up for success and foster positive relationship building between parent and child. Through my social media and YouTube, I like to share educational videos but also family fun videos. Life is about balance and our family is all about showing our fun side as well.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was always taught that everything happens for a reason. While I can’t say that the road has always been smooth, I can say that I am currently exactly where I need to be, doing what I need to do – and that’s a blessing.

As you know, we’re big fans of A Tayste for Life. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My life revolves around education. After graduating from Dartmouth College, I set out to teach – and absolutely loved it. It’s what led me to get my Master’s in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I also have a full-time job and am a mother of three. Juggling all of this is what motivated me to start A Tayste for Life. A Tayste for Life (www.ataysteforlife.com) is a newsletter that focuses on education and parenting.

Every month, I send out a newsletter about topics that are relevant to parents supporting their children through their K-12 education. For example, during February the newsletter included activities for Black History Month that you could do with your elementary, middle school, and high school-aged children. Although it’s focused on what parents can do, it’s also a good resource for classroom teachers as well.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Living a life that I can be proud of is what’s most important to me. As I’ve gotten older my likes and my dislikes have changed or deepened, my geographic location has changed, and even the people around me have changed as they’ve grown. My only constant is me. That being said, living a life full of integrity and love is what matters the most to me. I am hopeful that if I do that, everything will turn out alright
