Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Free.
Tiffany, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been doing hair since I was a little girl. At 19 in cosmetology school, I decided I wanted to make sure to do the healthiest hair care I possibly could. My first salon was called Tiffany’s for healthy hair. I started doing locs right after hair school. Eventually, I discovered locs to be the healthiest option for afro/tight curly hair. So I slowly transitioned from all things hair to locs only. I spent a lot of time agonizing over why locs worked the way they did and how to perfect my methods. When I went back to school for my cosmetology instructor’s license, I realized a lot of the most important information to growing locs was in the very basics of hair care. Over time I started getting requests to teach my methods. And I found that the internet was full of misguided and confusing information. So I changed the name of the salon to Locc’d In and started one on one training in my hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. I also started my YouTube channel. I referred my 500+ clients to some of the ladies I’d trained and in July 2018, I moved to Atlanta to start over. I worked at various salons and sometimes at home as I built a clientele. Once I started getting requests to train and had to turn away multiple clients a day, I knew it was time to reopen.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge was deciding to open in 2020. I originally had planned to begin in March 2020 but that’s right when the pandemic broke and so instead I took time off. But I had so many clients telling me they needed me that I decided to brave the world and go for it. We opened in September 2020.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Locc’d In Atlanta?
Locc’d In is a loc specializing salon. Not only do we make sure your locs look great but we make sure they are healthy as well. Almost as much as we twist locs, we educate. We make sure clients know how the locking process works so they can make good choices for the health and longevity of their hair. There are a lot of myths out there about loc maintenance and some of it is dangerous. There is a lot of math and science that goes into a healthy, beautiful head of locs. My favorite saying is “When the math and science is correct, the art creates itself”.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
It’s very important to me that people have healthy options to grow their hair long and strong no matter the hair type. Hair with tight curls “type 4” has struggled for so long and now we know for sure there is a healthy natural solution. Locs! I want to be available to the people who want to grow their hair the healthiest and fastest way possible.
