Hidden Gems: Meet Tykia Mcgriff of W.I.N Co

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tykia Mcgriff.

Tykia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be an entrepreneur. My parents are business owners so I get it honest. My stepdad worked in the entertainment industry and he would take me to meetings and I was able to meet big players in the game and learn. This experience had a huge impact on me and my decision to want to be an entrepreneur. In the beginning I wanted to go to college and major in international business but I changed my mind and decided I wanted to be a doctor. After my freshman year I changed my major to Psychology and started a clothing and hair company selling online. My 1st business I was selling hair now I can do hair a little bit but I am not a hairstylist. While I was in college, I saw a need for hair extensions on campus and I was like you know what I’m going to fix the problem and started selling hair. It’s very important that when you start a business, the business is the solution to a problem. My focus then started to shift towards fashion. I always had a thing for fashion, when I was around 12 years old, I made denim handbags out of old jeans and my dad brought me sewing machines so I could make whatever I wanted to make at that time. I started selling clothes from different vendors in college and learned about the fashion industry and when I moved to LA five years ago, I enrolled into school again at FIDM to gain more knowledge because I wanted to learn more for myself and others. Throughout the years, I provided catering services to family, friends, & people in the entertainment business and I got my cooking skills from my mom. She has her own catering business as well and I worked with her growing up and she provided that knowledge for me. I did this for a while and then I started helping others with their business and this is when I realized I had a passion for helping others business owners and providing resources. This is how I got to W.I.N my business development company which provides many different services to entrepreneurs from business formations to Human Resources management. We offer a plethora of services to help businesses go to the next level. I also have a catering company, The Secret Gem Catering and an online boutique called Faith Boutique LLC. I am also a Minister and a Mother.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is never a smooth road and beings though I have many gifts and talents, I was dabbling in a lot of different industries (hair, fashion, catering, business development) before I got to where I am now. Since I was into so many things, I struggled with what I really wanted to do but even with that, it allowed me to gain so much knowledge and resources for W.I.N. Another struggle was people was not always willing to give information or teach me about certain things so I took it upon myself to enroll in college three different times for three different majors and get degrees to learn and research the topics. It worked out in the long run because I am now able to help other people and give real knowledge and not surface information but it was very frustrating and at times discouraging. Of course, I went through the broke phase and not always having money to do certain things I wanted to do with my businesses but I found the resources to help me cross that bridge.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
