Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Marshall.
Hi Whitney, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My first job after graduating from college was as an HR Assistant at an international law firm. After developing the firm’s first employee volunteer program in 2004, I became the Manager of Community Relations. I ultimately became the first Director, Corporate Citizenship, where I was responsible for leading volunteerism, diversity & inclusion, philanthropic giving, community leadership, and sustainability. I truly loved creating programs and partnerships that channeled people’s passions into action, provided attorneys and professional staff with a greater sense of purpose, and helped strengthen communities.
During my twentieth performance review in 2019, I was told that my job was being eliminated. It was a total shock and felt like such a betrayal after devoting my career to the firm. I had a one-year-old at home, undiagnosed post-partum depression, and was caring for my elderly in-laws, who were living with us due to some unexpected medical challenges. Needless to say, it was an incredibly stressful and difficult time in my life.
While trying to determine my next professional move, I reflected on a conversation I had with a mentor in 2015 who encouraged me to consider a career in coaching. After researching the industry, talking to other coaches, and evaluating certification options, I realized I would regret not trying this new career path more than if I tried and failed. I started my certification with the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (IPEC) in March 2020, the weekend the state of Georgia shut down because of COVID. I had my first paying client by that summer, and I haven’t looked back since!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! I have navigated numerous transitions in my life. For example, in the last fifteen years alone, I’ve gotten divorced and remarried, bought a house, turned forty, had a baby, cared for my elderly in-laws, unexpectedly lost my job, and started my first business in the middle of a global pandemic with a toddler at home. Some of these challenges were harder than others, but each one has helped me live more fully into the woman I’m proud to be becoming. Now I support leaders who find themselves feeling undervalued, overcommitted, and facing uncertainty in their careers. I help them thoughtfully navigate their own transitions to remain aligned with their values. After coaching, my clients can tackle their challenges with confidence, resilience, and authenticity. I get to be the coach I wish I’d had during my various challenges and transitions! How cool is that?!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
