My professional journey began in corporate finance, where I worked as an Oracle Functional Financial Consultant. Around a decade ago, I made the intentional decision to step away from my career to become a stay-at-home mother, prioritizing our children’s intellectual growth, core values, and moral foundation during their formative years.
Throughout this chapter, creativity remained central to who I am. I have always been drawn to painting, arts and crafts, design, décor, and baking. These passions naturally extended into hosting celebrations—birthdays, cultural gatherings, and family events—where I focused on cohesive themes, curated details, and visually engaging experiences that consistently left a lasting impression on guests.
Several years ago, while planning one of our child’s milestone birthdays, we chose to host the celebration at a professional venue to accommodate family traveling from out of state and abroad. When several highly regarded local event stylists were unavailable, I decided to take full creative ownership of the event. From a dessert chiara arch and custom treats to cakes, guest favors, table settings, centerpieces, and a statement backdrop focal point, I designed and executed every detail. The celebration was exceptionally well received and marked a pivotal moment—encouraging me to transform a long-standing personal passion into a professional endeavor.
While I plan to return to my business administration career in the future, event planning and styling remains my most fulfilling creative pursuit. It allows me to blend strategic thinking, meticulous attention to detail, and artistic expression to transform meaningful milestones into beautifully designed, unforgettable celebrations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been a smooth road? Not entirely. One of the toughest challenges in event planning and styling is attracting quality clients. It’s always tempting to say “yes” to every inquiry, but taking on the wrong client can quickly turn a joyful project into a stressful experience. Both sides end up disappointed—you may feel overworked and underpaid, while the client doesn’t receive the experience they envisioned. Learning to recognize the right fit early on has been a critical lesson.
Early in my journey, I also witnessed peers having to update contracts or even rebrand after negative experiences—not always due to anything they did wrong, but to better set expectations and protect their business. These experiences, while challenging at the time, are invaluable for long-term growth. They teach you to be more intentional with your client selection, clarify your service offerings, and reinforce professional boundaries. In the long run, these lessons lead to a stronger brand, a more efficient workflow, and happier clients.
Networking with other vendors, venues, and industry professionals has been another essential strategy. Collaborating with trusted partners ensures smooth logistics, provides mutual support during high-demand seasons, and even introduces you to the right type of clients. Equally important is creating seamless touchpoints for clients—from a professional website and inquiry process to clear digital contracts and online payment systems. The hurdles of running a creative business also push you to continuously refine your skills and services. Over time, this intentional approach ensures that the projects you take on are rewarding, both creatively and financially.
