Today we’d like to introduce you to Jontayia Hudson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I started doing hair at a young age, after graduating high school, I went straight to cosmetology school, I graduated and subsequently got my license. Owning a salon had always been a dream, while in cosmetology school, I wrote a list of goals, owning a salon by 27 was one, and basically forgot about it, I didn’t want to just jump right into owning one, I felt I was too young to own one at the time, though I had been offered several opportunities to have my own before I finally opened one. It wasn’t until I had my son that I really started being serious about owning my own. In 2015 right before my 28th birthday, I signed my lease to open Blac Bella Salon… Amazingly, I was opened for business in less than 30 days, thanks to the amazing people God had placed in my life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth, Oh No, nothing worth having comes easy, but I will say the journey has been worth it, I’ve always been self-employed, but opening a physical business is definitely on another level, transitioning from booth renter to salon owner had its challenges. I had to learn how to budget my money, there were definitely times I had more bills than money not because I wasn’t making it but because I had a long habit of being careless with money, but everything is a learning process, I’m still learning as I go, in the last five and a half years, I’ve opened what I thought was my dream salon, closed it, because it seemed as if things weren’t working out like I had envisioned, moved into a smaller salon to save money to eventually having to upgrade to a bigger one because I had outgrown the one I was in. It’s just a blessing to do what I love and do it in a space I created.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
First and Foremost, God, for everything and placing amazing people in my life along the way. My Mom, for ALWAYS believing in me and supporting me. My cousins Lakesha Clark and Semetress Simmons for going through the fire with me, they were there for the good, bad and the ugly encouraging me. All my clients, without them there would be no Blac Bella Salon, one of my best friends Cedric Wright, and a long time client Miranda Wilson. They helped me a whole lot in the beginning stages of Blac Bella Salon Studio, Tchaikovsky Crosley, for staying on me making sure I keep moving forward no matter what, he also helped me come up with the salon name, Jackie Hughes, Katina Culver, Taidra Kelly, Stephanie Waller and Tamika Waller for the opportunity to work in their salons I learned a lot from these five women.
My pastor Fred Lowe who is always a phone call away when I’m in need for anything from remodeling the salon to encouraging words. My Long Client Adrienne Harris who was always my biggest motivator, last but not least, Tamika Waller and J’von Solomon for choosing Blac Bella Salon Studio to work in, they are definitely part of the reason Blac Bella Salon in Still standing. There is really too many people to name, My support has been amazing from the very beginning, I’m so thankful.
