Inspiring Conversations with Seydou Maiga of SEYYWAY

Hi Seydou, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out not knowing much about the industry of fashion. In 2017 I began to cut and sew my own clothing, and by 2019 I officially launched my brand. Coming from a foreign household, my parents being from Mali, my siblings and I were always taught that self-discipline must be your main goal to achieve something great. At a young age, I told myself that no matter what I do in life, self-discipline must be the thing that gets me to that dream. Fashion has given me a platform to inspire and be the creator younger generations need. My brand is focused on the message we go by, “Be True, Be You.” I want to inspire people to want to be themselves through my brand. I want to give people hope through a message of positivity. Getting to where I am today only came from self-disciple and who I keep in my circle. Everyone has dreams, but self-discipline is what allows you to grasp that dream in your hands. Whether it is me waking up at 3 am because I have an idea or it is me constantly trying to be better.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been smooth figuring out what I initially wanted my brand to mean to people. I knew I wanted a message that would resonate with people when they bought my products. Coming up with a message to inspire people became my main focus as my brand began to grow. I needed people to understand that when they wore my clothing, it was because they understood what it meant. Being a part of this journey means being true to who you are and what you believe. Letting your values drive rather than the values of others. While fashion is the main idea, I wanted to change the narrative and give a voice to those who wear SEYYWAY.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SEYYWAY?
The type of clothing I design is streetwear- designing multiple pieces of art that fit the image the brand intends to spread. When creating my designs, I seek to positively influence and connect with those who see my work. What sets me apart from other brands is the tireless pursuit of making sure my collections can fit all people’s lifestyles. I am most proud of this brand’s ability to have such unique designs while continually making sure people understand how much we value being true to yourself and living the life you see fit without society’s negative impact. Being able to accomplish that through many people so far is a blessing. I want everyone to know our brand was created to suit all people. We work every day to make the brand as diverse as possible while still respecting the culture. I want every race and gender to know they can find a home at SEYYWAY.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The most significant supporters are my family. My parents always push me to be a better man and to trust the process of God. Having both my parents in my corner drives my passion and hustle even more, because I want them to experience better days. My oldest brother has given me the best support I could ever ask for. He challenges me to reach new heights every day but to always be humble when you get there. My sister has always expressed her appreciation towards me and shows me that life can only be lived once, but once is enough. My youngest brother has always supported the brand and is always engaged with even the little things. My girlfriend and her family have given me immense support and love through the process of my success as well. Having these individuals in my circle has played a massive role in how my brand is perceived today. Without the love and consistency of these people in my life, it would have been tough to have the success I have today.
