Inspiring Conversations with Abriel Farrow, LMFT of Transparent Truth Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abriel Farrow, LMFT.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have been a Marriage and Family Therapist for a total of six years. Throughout those years, I have gained experience in private practice, in-home, and inpatient settings. Approximately six months ago, I realized that the recognition of the need for therapy was at an all-time high! I attribute that recognition to the world’s experience with COVID-19. I was certain that I would open a private practice later in life out of fear of the unknown. During the onset of COVID-19, both my husband and mother encouraged me to open my private practice. I immediately shut the idea down at the thought of trying to run a business, be a wife and mother all at once. I would say, “That’s just too much for me right now.” But two years later, I was talking to my mom and she casually stated, “So many people are needing therapy.” In no way was she trying to hint at me to open a practice like in the past. However, I heard that statement differently. When she said that, I heard “It’s time to open your own practice.” Once my mind is set on something, it is set! So that day I reached out to different colleagues who had their own practices to help me through the process and the rest was history. To go to sleep the night before with no previous thoughts or desires of opening a private practice (at the time) to waking up the next morning learning the step-by-step process of opening up a business lets me know that it was a God thing! The fear and uncertainty that I previously experienced was no longer my experience. I started Transparent Truth Counseling Services completely confident in the uncertainty of where this endeavor would take both me and my family!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Transparent Truth Counseling Services is four months old, and overall, the process has been smooth! I have been able to learn from other business owners who have taught me strategies to keep me ahead of the challenges such as outsourcing when necessary! Whew! That was a big one! Outsourcing different tasks has afforded me more time to focus on what I do best; Therapy! Because life is life, I am sure that challenges will arise and I will tackle them as they come. For now, I am thankful for the smooth process and for having a great network of therapists to learn from!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and I provide virtual mental health services for individuals and families in the state of Georgia!

I named my practice “Transparent Truth” because I believe that TRANSPARENCY yields vulnerability which in turn allows individuals to acknowledge their current human experience or TRUTH! This process creates space for individuals to dismantle TRUTHS that don’t serve them any longer and recreate new narratives in order to live in their preferred TRUTH!

I help individuals live life on their terms by redefining what it means to be “enough” and unpacking simultaneous experiences of anxiety and feelings of being overwhelmed.

I help families and couples address societal, familial, and cultural standards that influence the well-being of the relationship and help create new standards that will unify both individuals simultaneously.

I am proud to be able to help others live the life that they desire to live on their terms despite other influences that encourage them to do otherwise. I am proud that my clients can be the better version of themselves and live life unapologetically! I am truly honored to create a space where individuals feel safe enough to share their life experiences with me and witness human transformation firsthand! It never gets old to me and I am completely humbled to be graced for this profession!

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Being a risk-taker has never been a natural personality trait of mine. I consider myself very structured and need to know the outcome type of person, or at least I used to be. Starting my business was the greatest risk that I can recall taking! I discontinued my job as a full-time employee with benefits to start a business that I had no physical proof would work! In addition, I made this decision just a month after my second child was born.

I thought to myself, “I’m doing something I know God led me to do, so it has to work. Even if it didn’t, I would never know if I didn’t try.” I also thought, “The worst thing could happen is that I get another full-time position. Easy!”

However, I have fallen in love with the entrepreneurial lifestyle so I’m going to give it my best to continue to live life on my terms!
