Today we’d like to introduce you to Alessio Urso.
Hi Alessio, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have been in the lighting business for over twenty years. I started out in Honduras as a lighting store, but with an engineering background, product sales were not very satisfying. Including a lighting design service came naturally to me, and that evolved into a design/sales business where my team provided lighting and custom integration (smart home) design services and product sale and installation. My wife and I eventually decided that Honduras was not the best place to raise our children. We moved to Georgia on an investor’s visa, and I started with a lighting design consulting firm from scratch. Although the first couple of years were difficult, I was lucky to connect with people who helped me grow my business. Among my recent projects, I am very proud and grateful to have worked on the lighting design for the newly opened Savoy Automobile Museum.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a consulting business in a new country where no one knew me was difficult. Being new in the area, meeting the right people in such a niche market was challenging. In addition, the pandemic made meeting new potential clients even harder.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about LightSmarts?
LightSmarts creates great visual experiences while promoting health and wellbeing in residential and commercial lighting design by working cohesively with architects, interior designers, and property owners. Lighting design is a mix of art and science. Designers are concerned about the aesthetics, and the art of lighting. They must also utilize considerable technical knowledge and keep current with new technology, the science of lighting. Above all, lighting is for people, and we need to understand the effects of lighting on human biology and its impact on our health.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
The best networking results I had were through LinkedIn. My situation is perhaps different from others because of how niche my field of work is and because my client base is mainly limited to architects, interior designers, and custom integrators. I want to thank Gregg Burkhalter. “The LinkedIn Guy”, who taught me how to use LinkedIn successfully,
