Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Deister.
Alex, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have known I wanted to be a chiropractor since Career Fair Day in the 8th grade. We had a chiropractor come and adjust one of his patients (someone from my class) in front of everyone. As a middle schooler, the cracking was the coolest thing I’d ever seen! Shortly after that, I started working for a chiropractor doing mostly filing and front desk work my freshman year of high school and I have been around chiropractic ever since!
As far as chiropractic school, all of my mentors said Life University was the place to be! I graduated in 2019 and decided to stay and practice in Georgia, I’m originally from Indiana. I took a job with the place I did my internship with as a chiropractic student and I am still with the same company today.
I was about two years into practice when I started thinking about having kids. I went down a rabbit hole of preconception preparation and stumbled on something call Birthfit. It’s all about preparing your body for conception, birth and postpartum. I became a Birthfit Leader and Coach so I could help bridge the gap between patients and their providers.
Chiropractic care helped me have a smooth pregnancy and I knew I wanted to help others in doing so too. I received my Webster certification which teaches you how to adjust the pregnant population. After having my first baby, I started really getting into pediatrics. My daughter was born with hip dysplasia so I tried to learn as much as I could to help her. I am in love with all things pregnancy and pediatrics and will never stop taking seminars, classes, shadowing other providers and absorbing all of the knowledge I can.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Pretty smooth overall. I am so blessed I have always known what I wanted to do. I would say the first two years in practice, not specializing like I do now, was a less enjoyable period. I think you are just trying to find where you fit and what you are good at. It’s hard to not compare yourself to other providers that have been in practice longer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Georgia Chiropractic and Massage?
Our practice is a group practice. We all have the same patient centered focus but each provider brings different specialties and expertise. I specialize in preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and pediatrics. I am proud that any location you go to you will get the same quality care. We offer so many things other than chiropractic! We have massage therapists, spinal decompression, rehabilitative care and even craniosacral therapy.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I would say I am generally not a risk taker. About the biggest risk I took was moving to New Zealand for a year! I didn’t know anyone so it was a bit scary being on the other side of the world from everything I knew. From that experience I would say be a risk taker. It’s a memory I look back on very fondly and I feel like I grew a lot in that year.
