Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex McCarty.
Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I worked for a local hot rod shop through high school and college. After finishing college and welding school I knew I wanted to have my own shop. I had already collected enough tools and had the drive to make it happen. At 23 I opened up my shop, McCarty Speed & Fab, and never looked back!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We are creeping up on my 10 year anniversary this year. I struggled a little in the beginning keeping my schedule full. Between a few mentors and some great customers they have made this much more smooth. The classic car world can be stressful from making new parts fit to fighting old car gremlins. We have to take it day by day and keep pushing to get the jobs done!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
McCarty Speed & Fab is a small town hot rod shop and fabrication business all in one. I specialize in classic vehicles 1987 and older. I restore cars from the ground up or make the smallest changes to finished cars. I work with customers who are also building their own cars at home and sell them all the correct parts to finish the job. Whether they can build the car all the way or just get to a point where I finish it, I am willing to help!
I am known for building high quality stainless steel exhaust systems, chasing electrical problems, as well as all types of welding.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I’ve definitely had some luck on my side. To grow up in my industry and have some of the best mentors has helped me tremendously. Ive been very lucky in some of the jobs I’ve been able to complete. All of the good also brings on some bad luck. Certain cars and parts fight us all the time and we just have to use all of that to learn more!
