Inspiring Conversations with Amber Jacobs of Poppin’ Stop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Jacobs

Hi Amber , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 2014, I founded Poppin’ Stop in Hephzibah (Augusta), GA, driven by the vision to introduce a unique concept to the community. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to intertwine my passion for business, popcorn and art. Our first shop showcased local artists alongside a selection of over 40 gourmet popcorn flavors.

My experiences commuting through Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport and my tenure at the High Museum of Art inspired me to create a space where art and flavor converge. This not only provided a delightful visual experience for our patrons while they awaited their popcorn but also served as a platform to elevate local talent.

Understanding the challenges of our initial location, which wasn’t positioned in a high-traffic area, we innovated by offering a variety of services—such as popcorn field trips to local schools and daycares, popcorn paint parties, and fundraising events—to attract visitors. In 2018, we seized the opportunity to relocate to a bustling area in Conyers, GA, leading to the difficult decision to close our first location and fully dedicate ourselves to this new chapter.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has certainly had its challenges, but my passion for what I do makes navigating the tough times a bit more manageable. I adhere to a steadfast “no-giving up” policy and firmly believe that “where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

In the beginning, I underestimated the complexities of opening a brick-and-mortar location. Without a comprehensive business plan, I found myself learning about essential components such as marketing, staffing, and management as I went along. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced additional hurdles; we were forced to temporarily close our doors while still being responsible for our rent. Securing funding to refine our business model and foster growth has also proven to be a significant challenge.

As you know, we’re big fans of Poppin’ Stop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Poppin’ Stop is a gourmet popcorn shop proudly offering over 20 handcrafted flavors of popcorn, all made in-store with a generous dose of love. We are dedicated to providing our guests with an exceptional product and a memorable experience every time they visit or place an order.

In addition to our retail offerings, we provide popcorn fundraisers, popcorn gifts, custom favors, and bulk options for events and corporate activities. Two years ago, we took an exciting leap by franchising our business model, and we currently have one franchised location that opened earlier this year in Covington, GA, with another set to open in Decatur, GA.

My vision is to see a Poppin’ Stop in every state. This year marks our 10-year milestone!

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Luck has played a nuanced role in my life and business journey. On one hand, I have experienced moments of “good luck” that have propelled me forward—like meeting key individuals who believed in my vision and provided invaluable guidance. Additionally, finding the right location for Poppin’ Stop was a stroke of luck that significantly increased our visibility and customer base.

On the other hand, I’ve also faced instances of “bad luck” that tested my resilience. The challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic were unexpected hurdles that forced us to adapt and rethink our strategies. However, these experiences taught me that while luck can influence outcomes, it’s ultimately my determination and ability to pivot that have shaped our success.

Overall, I believe that luck is just one piece of the puzzle; hard work, passion, perseverance and a good team are the driving forces behind my journey.
