Today we’d like to introduce you to Aramide Dada.
Aramide, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I discovered my passion for hair around the age of seven. While growing up in Nigeria, I watched the women in my household braid other women’s hair. I was fascinated by their ability to transform an Afro to an elaborate hairstyle that enhanced each woman’s beauty.
When I returned to the US, I had the opportunity to explore my passion. With the help of YouTube tutorials and family and friends that wanted their hair braided, I developed my braiding skills and learned how to take care of natural hair.
My business started my sophomore year of college. There were few to no braiders on campus, so students had to travel out of town to get their hair done. A friend needed twists for a trip and she contemplated traveling back home to get it done. I offered to do her hair and she loved the results. Other students also liked her hair and wanted me to do theirs as well. I had so many people reach out to me that I decided to organize myself into a business.
Along my journey as a hair braider, I noticed some gaps in the natural hair industry. I hope to fill these gaps with my own natural hair care line. I am in the process of launching a restorative hair serum which helps restore edges and hair that has been thinned by tight hairstyles or wigs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. One of the main challenges I faced was balancing braiding with school. I wanted to explore so much with my business, but I did not have enough time as a full-time student. I decided to prioritize school and braid whenever I had the time. After graduating, I am able to focus more on my business. And I look forward to growing my business and clientele.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Curlz of Glory?
I currently provide braiding services, and I will provide natural hair services in the near future. Some braiding services I provide are knotless braids, soft locs, passion twist, butterfly locs and crochet braids. I hope to inspire naturals to see their hair as a glorifying crown. I provide natural hair care tips during braiding services and on my social media pages. I plan to start a natural hair care line that will help naturals feel empowered and confident wearing their kinky, curly hair. I currently have a restorative hair serum which helps grow back thinning hair and edges.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I believe that things happen in life for a reason and purpose. I wouldn’t really say luck played a role in my life and business, but I would say that God’s guidance has helped me make decisions that put me on the right path. For example, I was not interested in the college I attended. But I applied because my guidance counscelor kept telling me to do so. And I applied through the Posse Scholarship Program. Throughout my college application process, I asked God to close the doors that were not meant for me and open the ones that were. I asked God to allow me to get into the program if it was meant for me. I was accepted into the Posse Program, which is very competitive, so I realized that the school was meant for me. I believe the lack of braiders on campus gave me an advantage with starting my business. I was able to quickly build clientele and gain the experience I am now using to expand my business. Because I allowed God to order my steps, I am where I am today. And as I continue to follow God’s guidance, I will remain on the path that’s right for me and be successful in what I do.
