Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayanna Muhammad.
Hi Ayanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
First Key Property Management came into fruition literally in my kitchen. I was about 6 or 7 months pregnant with my second son and still working a 9 to 5 job in customer relations. As a teen, I was always very career-minded, but I always envisioned owning my own business. I watched my Mother create additional streams of income by doing flea markets, making clothes and jewelry, and doing hair for over 20 years. I knew that if my Mother could be successful as an entrepreneur I could do the same. I knew that as much as I enjoyed working and having a consistent paycheck ultimately for the life that I wanted for myself and my children I needed to be doing way more. As a Wife and Mother, I wanted to have more time with my family, I wanted to be able to attend school functions and activities without wondering if I had enough PTO or travel to see my family without having to get approval – I wanted to be able to make my own schedule without question. Don’t get me wrong, a consistent paycheck is better than no paycheck but after a while, I started to think about my own personal goals and what I saw for myself but most importantly, the example I would be setting for my children. My husband (who has been in construction for 20 years) and I started to brainstorm and before we knew it we were up and running with our first client.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Let’s just say the road has been smooth with a few potholes here and there. I had to learn that building a brand is not an easy job. I have always been a “creative” so the aesthetic side of things was fun, but the paperwork and everything else involved can be a lot of moving parts. Our biggest challenge was building our in-house team of contractors. We don’t just want help, we want Good Help, so making sure that everyone on the team was not just skilled in what we needed but also reliable. The other challenge that we come across is our pay scale. Our clients work on Net 15 or Net 30, while some contractors are used to getting paid right after the job is completed, there can be a 15 to 30-day turnaround time to be paid out. The good thing is that we consistently have maintenance work orders from other clients that pay out a lot faster within 7 days.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

How do you think about happiness?
I have several things in my life to fulfill and keep me happy. My wonderful husband of almost 16 years, I have 2 amazing boys 14 and 2, and 1 beautiful bonus daughter. My mother is back home in Baltimore but we have one of the best mother and daughter relationships. My family and friends keep me happy and a few hobbies to keep my creative juices flowing.
