Inspiring Conversations with Brad Kolowich Jr of KoloFit Personal Training Studio (Atlanta + Lake Oconee)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Kolowich Jr

Hi Brad, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My interest in health and fitness began at a very young age. My Dad was and currently still is a personal trainer and my Mom was an aerobics instructors for large group classes at the local club. I’m sure that I wasn’t much older than a few years before I was already sitting on the sidelines of Dad’s personal training sessions and Mom’s aerobic classes observing as they trained and taught others all about health and fitness.

I remember well my Dad allowing me to lift a broomstick in the same way that he lifted the barbell. Early on, both Dad and Mom inspired my interest in health and fitness, although neither actually encouraged a career path in the industry.

As I navigated my way through my undergraduate degree, I dabbled with the idea of various career paths, from pharmaceutical sales to commercial real estate, but am so grateful in the end that I choose to follow my gut and go with the fitness industry.

Upon graduation from UGA, I taught tennis as well as strength and conditioning to the tennis athletes at a local Atlanta club. After about a year or so in the tennis industry, I began to shift my focus to developing a personal training career as I juggled both for some time before I was officially able to put full attention towards personal training. From about 2008 to current, I’ve developed two brick and mortar fitness studio locations in both Atlanta as well as Lake Oconee, Georgia with a staff of 13 team members. We have the great honor of working with so many wonderful clients daily towards achieving their ultimate health and fitness goals. There’s truly nothing like working a career that’s truly fulfilling in so many ways. Don’t get me wrong, there are tough days indeed. But, in the end, I believe that if we choose a career path’s that enjoyable, the financial reward as well as true satisfaction will come.

A lesson for you my friends that may be contemplating what to study and/or which career path to choose: Take the path that your gut most guides you, because in the end, I can confidently assure you that this path will be the path that allows you to create the most success. Life’s too short to follow the path that may be best suited for another. Follow your path and you will achieve great success and most importantly, happiness.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There’s no doubt that when creating something of great value, there will be tremendous struggles all along the way. I’m confident that if you were to ask 10 entrepreneurs if they endured great struggles in route to achieving a business of great value, all 10 will absolutely tell you that they navigated rocks all along the way.

I myself can say that we have navigated mountains all along the way to where we are today as a studio. From being forced to move business locations (due to a zoning issue) to staff related losses, and everything in between, I can assure you that we’ve seen it all. The road has been far from smooth, but, in the end, it was a road that I’d take again. Any day.

Regardless of your vision, be prepared to navigate a rocky path. The key though, will be your ability to continue to stay the course, which if you do, will lead to great success. The difference between those that achieve great success and those that fall short, is the willingness of those to continue the course, regardless of the detour. Embrace the fear, stay the course, and in the end, great success will come.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
The honest truth is, if I’m not working with clients, managing our fitness studios, or hanging with my wife and our 3 boys, I’m probably reading about aviation! My whole life, for as long as I can ever remember, I’ve dreamt of flying. Like Superman flying. I know, haha. So, I made it a goal that when I turned 40 years old, I would began studying and training for my pilot’s license. Fast forward two and half years later and here I am. I have my pilot’s license and I’m most of the way through my Instrument Rating, which I plan to have this year. I’ll then continue on to my Commercial rating as well, in the years to come.

As you might imagine, there’s SO much to learn with aviation, so, I’m always continuing my studies on how I can continue to stay sharp and safe in the air as well as mentally tough on the ground. Aviation seems to do it for me. Just not a whole lot like it.

I challenge you to find something of passion that challenges you, both mentally and physically, and make it a part of your life. You’ll stay sharp and you’ll stay happy, which is not only a win for yourself, but also for all of those around you.
