Inspiring Conversations with Brandi Reed of 1942 Social Kitchen & Cocktails

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Reed.

Brandi Reed

Hi Brandi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was thrown into the restaurant industry in 2009 when my father decided he wanted to open a restaurant and name it after me, “Brandi’s Sports Cafe”. This was my first job and I had no idea what I was doing? I was a full-time student at GA State and was very overwhelmed. I attended bartending school to at least give me basic knowledge on serving drinks. Brandi’s Sports Cafe was in business for close to 2 years. After selling the restaurant, I decided to stay in college an additional semester and earn a secondary minor in hospitality, as I developed a passion for the business. I then got a job as a server at the Marriott Marquis. I worked at the Marriott for 13 years part-time, where I was able to grow significantly in the hospitality industry. In between, I worked in my career field as a psychotherapist. In 2021, I assisted my father in opening his sports bar and lounge. They will be celebrating their 2nd year anniversary in October 2023. After going through that process and becoming more knowledgeable, I realized that I wanted another restaurant of my own. In February of 2022, my father found us a location. I discussed the plan with my friend of 24 years and now a business partner. The three of us put together a business plan, signed our lease in April and opened the door to 1942 Social kitchen and cocktails in four short months.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Restaurant licensing and permitting is usually a hectic process but for me, it went very well. I think the biggest challenge was finding quality staff and learning the marketing, advertising and staying abreast of how to keep customers coming back.

As you know, we’re big fans of 1942 Social Kitchen & Cocktails. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
1942 is a minority female-owned bar and restaurant. 1942 is a full-service bar and restaurant located just 25 minutes from downtown Atlanta with indoor and outdoor seating, dining and bar services in addition to live music and hookah services. We are known for our salmon alfredo stuffed potato and our signature cocktails such as the Hennerita, margarita flights and our 1942 Punch. 1942 social provides a city-like atmosphere on the Southside of Atlanta. We are most proud of our service and the loyal customer base we have built in less than a year. I am also proud that I have been able to feature several black-owned liquor companies and form great relationships.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that in addition to being a psychotherapist that I also DJ.
