Today we’d like to introduce you to Briana Smith.
Hi Briana, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Wow….my story…I think this is my first time thinking back on “my story”.
I have about a 15 years relationship with hair. I started like most stylists; doing family and friends hair in the living room and kitchen but I needed more structure AND money lol. I found a stylist on Craigslist that was looking for a shampoo tech/apprentice. She was the first stylist I knew that worked four days a week and made six figures….she opened my eyes to a different side of the industry. Never finishing my apprenticeship, I started cosmetology school and started assisting in one of the biggest/highest earning salons in Mountain Brook. From there, I rose from being an assistant to a level two stylist in under two years…which is kind of a big deal hahaha. From there I moved to Wheelhouse Salon in Downtown Bham where I gained the esteem and faith to step out on my own… a place where clients, no matter the sex or color will feel safe and comfortable.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Having to balance family, kids, school, and work was extremely challenging. My husband and I fell into extreme financial issues slap dab in the middle of me going to school there where times I didn’t think I would be able to finish. I didn’t think we would make it, I thank God that he and the support system he blessed us with got us through.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Briana Smith Hair Studio?
Here at “The Studio” I cater to a multicultural clientele and pride myself in creating a space where anyone can feel comfortable and welcomed. I specialize in MicroLinks, Blonding services, and healthy hair care. I also provide extension training to stylists looking to add to their service list.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
5-10 years from now, I see my brand expanding to hair care tools; such as detangle brushes, silk pillowcases, and hot tools. Also, I see myself training a stylist in an apprenticeship and giving knowledge that was given to me.
