Today we’d like to introduce you to Celena Kemp.
Hi Celena, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey into the mental health field wasn’t just a career decision — it was a calling shaped by both professional experience and personal growth. I’ve always been someone people felt comfortable opening up to. Even before I had the degrees or credentials, I naturally found myself supporting others through difficult seasons. Over time, I realized that what came naturally to me was something I could refine, study, and use to truly change lives.
I began my career working in behavioral health in direct-care roles, supporting children and families navigating significant emotional and behavioral challenges. Those early experiences were foundational. They taught me compassion, patience, and the importance of meeting people exactly where they are. From there, I transitioned into school-based therapy, where I worked closely with students facing trauma, family instability, academic stress, and identity development. Being in the school system allowed me to see how deeply mental health impacts every area of a young person’s life.
As my experience grew, so did my leadership. I stepped into roles that allowed me to coordinate services for families involved with DHR and Medicaid, advocate within systems, and supervise others entering the field. Throughout each transition, my mission remained the same: to create safe spaces where individuals feel heard, empowered, and supported.
The road has not always been easy. Balancing professional growth with the many responsibilities and demands of life has required resilience, faith, and discipline. There have been seasons that stretched me, pushed me to learn, and challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone. Yet through every obstacle, my sense of purpose only grew stronger. Each challenge became an opportunity to grow, refine my calling, and remain committed to the work I am passionate about.
Today, I continue to serve children, adolescents, and families while also growing as a leader and supervisor in the mental health field. My work is rooted in empathy, accountability, and a deep belief that healing is possible — even when the journey feels overwhelming. I am passionate about breaking generational cycles, increasing access to quality mental health services, and modeling what it looks like to lead with both strength and compassion.
When I look back, I see that every role, every obstacle, and every opportunity prepared me for where I am now. And I truly believe I’m still evolving. My story is still being written — and that’s the most exciting part.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many people in the helping profession, my journey has come with both professional and personal challenges that stretched me in ways I didn’t expect.
Early in my career, I worked in high-intensity settings with children and families navigating trauma, behavioral crises, and complex systems. The emotional weight of that work can be heavy. I had to learn how to manage compassion fatigue, establish healthy boundaries, and accept that I could not fix everything — even when I deeply wanted to. There were moments of self-doubt where I questioned whether I was doing enough or truly making an impact.
Balancing professional growth has also been a major part of my journey. Building a career in mental health requires emotional presence, flexibility, and constant development. At the same time, my family needs that same presence from me. Learning to pursue excellence in my career without neglecting myself or my family required intentionality, structure, and grace.
One of the biggest leaps in my journey was co-founding New Purpose Counseling LLC with my business partner — who is also a close friend. Starting a private practice is already a bold move, but building one alongside someone you value personally adds another layer of growth. We had to learn how to blend friendship with business, communicate clearly, make hard decisions together, and stay aligned in vision. It stretched us in the best ways.
Transitioning from clinician to business owner required me to develop skills beyond therapy — leadership, operations, branding, and financial management. There were moments of uncertainty: wondering if we were ready, if clients would come, and if we could sustain what we were building. But our shared mission kept us grounded. We wanted to create a space rooted in empathy, accountability, and real healing — not just for clients, but within the culture of our practice.
Looking back, every challenge strengthened me. The difficult cases sharpened my clinical skills. The leadership roles built my confidence. Entrepreneurship expanded my capacity. The road hasn’t been easy, but it has been purposeful. And every obstacle has affirmed that growth rarely feels comfortable — but it always produces strength.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At New Purpose Counseling LLC, we officially launched in December 2022 with a clear vision and a powerful belief: **“Every Heart Needs A Beat.”** That statement is more than a tagline — it represents our philosophy. Just as a heartbeat sustains life, emotional wellness sustains everything else — our relationships, decisions, confidence, and overall purpose.
We provide counseling services for **children, adolescents, adults, and families**, offering support across the lifespan. Our areas of focus include trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral challenges, life transitions, emotional regulation, and family conflict. We work with individuals navigating personal growth as well as families seeking healthier communication and stronger relational foundations.
What sets us apart is our intentional, relational approach. We believe therapy should feel safe but also structured and growth-oriented. We don’t offer surface-level conversations — we provide clinically sound interventions while building authentic connections with our clients. Our goal is not just symptom relief but long-term transformation. We challenge our clients with accountability while surrounding them with empathy and support.
As co-founders, my business partner and I built this practice on collaboration, integrity, and a deep commitment to community impact. Because we both come from strong clinical backgrounds, we are passionate about delivering quality care that is both compassionate and effective. We are intentional about creating a culturally aware, welcoming environment where every client feels seen and valued.
Brand-wise, I am most proud that New Purpose Counseling LLC represents purpose over popularity. Everything we do aligns with our mission to help individuals rediscover their rhythm and rebuild their emotional strength. We are not just providing sessions — we are helping people reconnect with themselves and create healthier futures.
I want readers to know that our practice is a space for real healing. Whether someone is seeking support for their child, navigating a difficult season as an adult, or working to strengthen their family unit, we are here to walk alongside them. At the core of our brand is this belief: every heart needs a beat — and sometimes therapy is what helps restore it.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
One thing that might surprise people is that while I lead with confidence professionally, I am naturally very reflective and growth-oriented behind the scenes. People often see the clinician, the supervisor, or the business owner — but they may not see how much intentional self-work I pour into becoming better every season.
I spend a lot of time evaluating myself — my leadership, my parenting, my faith, and how I show up for others. I believe that if I’m asking my clients to do hard inner work, I should be willing to do the same. Growth is not just something I teach; it’s something I actively practice.
Another surprising piece is that entrepreneurship stretched me far beyond my comfort zone. Starting New Purpose Counseling LLC required me to develop confidence in areas I had never formally trained in — business strategy, branding, and decision-making at a higher level. I had to overcome imposter syndrome and truly own my seat at the table.
And on a more personal note, outside of my professional roles, I’m deeply family-centered. Motherhood is one of my greatest motivations. It fuels how I lead, how I build, and how I define success. Many people see the ambition, but not everyone sees the discipline, prayer, and quiet resilience behind it.
At the core, I’m not just building a brand — I’m building a legacy. And that legacy starts with continuing to evolve as a woman, leader, and healer.
