Today we’d like to introduce you to Chase Beard-Turner
Hi Chase, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Forget Me Nots Mercantile & Gift Shop started as a vision rooted in the importance of thoughtful gift-giving and the desire to create a space where culture and community intersect. Growing up, I learned the value of meaningful gifts—how they reflect love, care, and connection. I wanted to recreate that experience through a mercantile that showcases the creativity of Black, women-owned, LGBTQIA+-owned, and other BIPOC businesses.
After months of planning, sourcing from incredible makers, and pouring my heart into every detail, Forget Me Nots officially opened its doors on March 8, 2025, in Historic Downtown Douglasville. During our sneak peek period, the resounding phrase we heard was, “It’s a vibe.” From the inviting couch and the music selection to the carefully chosen scents, people felt the energy and warmth the moment they stepped inside. Our goal isn’t just to offer products—it’s to create a space where people feel seen and inspired. Forget Me Nots isn’t just about shopping; it’s about embracing culture and connection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve learned to balance the uncertainty with thoughtful planning. One of the biggest challenges was managing a full-time job while building the mercantile. I had to make sure I was still giving energy to my job while pouring my heart into launching my dream.
Research was key. I developed a detailed business plan with contingencies, factoring in the charm of Douglasville Square and the weekend foot traffic it attracts. It felt right—even if it meant sacrificing the higher daily foot traffic (and higher rent) of other areas.
Funding was another challenge—deciding how much of our savings to invest versus taking out a loan. It was a balancing act between risk and security, but ultimately, it was about creating a sustainable foundation for long-term success.
As you know, we’re big fans of Forget Me Nots Mercantile & Gift Shop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Forget Me Nots Mercantile & Gift Shop is more than a store—it’s a story. While it’s not exclusively focused on Black culture, that influence is undeniably felt and experienced throughout the space. From the live vinyl spinning classic 90s R&B to the scent that welcomes you at the door, every detail is intentional.
We’re a modern mercantile, meaning we carry a limited selection of 3 to 5 of the same item, ensuring that what you buy is unique and that you won’t see everyone else with it. Once those items are sold out, we don’t restock the same thing—we replenish with new, different finds, so each visit feels fresh and exciting, whether you’re shopping in-store or online.
Our product selection reflects the creativity and artistry of Black, women-owned, LGBTQIA+-owned, and other BIPOC businesses. For men, we offer more than just grooming products—you’ll find one-of-a-kind leather weekend bags, bourbon-flavored toothpicks, and other eclectic finds. Music lovers will appreciate our vinyl collection, carefully curated with a focus on R&B and timeless classics.
Ladies have no shortage of options, from blinged-out flasks and upcycled designer jewelry to wellness-focused items like Yoga Jenga and inspiring books. We also carry statement pieces for the home—decorative mirrors, Moroccan poufs, tables, and other beautifully crafted home goods. Our kids’ section is thoughtfully stocked with books on equality, custom tables and seating, and hand-crocheted rattles.
And we didn’t forget about our four-legged family members! From 100% cowhide pet beds to DIY pet biscuit kits, our offerings extend to every member of the household.
Forget Me Nots is more than just a place to shop—it’s a space where culture, creativity, and connection come together. Every piece has a story, and every visit leaves you feeling a little more inspired.
How do you define success?
Success for me isn’t just about sales or profit—it’s about the impact Forget Me Nots has on the community and the people who visit. When a customer finds that perfect gift or a piece that speaks to them, that’s success. It’s about seeing someone light up when they hear the vinyl playing their favorite R&B track or discovering a handmade product that reflects their identity and culture.
Success also means becoming a trusted and valued part of the Douglasville community—a place where residents bring friends and family, and where local businesses confidently refer customers because they trust our quality and experience. But more than that, success is about connection—when visitors come together during our events, share stories, and build relationships that last beyond the store. If Forget Me Nots can be a place where people connect, feel seen, and feel at home, that’s true success.
