Inspiring Conversations with Cherrell Thomas of Helpful Therapy Center, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cherrell Thomas.

Hi Cherrell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As I entered Hampton University as a Freshman, I wanted to be a Sports Journalist – specifically dreamed of co-hosting Sports Center. However, when I was getting back papers and the amount of red ink outweighed the black print on the paper – it was time for a change. So, I thought to blend my love for helping kids with the excitement I felt in my AP Psych class in high school. So I changed my major to Psychology and never looked back! My journey into entrepreneurship was basically accidental. I didn’t have a thirst for owning my own business but I knew I wanted to own my time, especially when I became a parent.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have definitely been some obstacles. The problems, challenges, and barriers that pop up in business. But for me the biggest obstacles were the voices of anxiety and self-doubt inside myself. Starting a private practice always seemed like something other clinicians did – not me. I was clearly wrong. And when it was time to grow the practice that voice in my head told me “no not yet”, “stay put”. But this time I knew not to listen. Facing my self-doubt allowed for a clear mind and confident heart that I needed to be able to handle difficulties as they arose (personally and professionally).

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Helpful Therapy Center, LLC?
Helpful Therapy Center is a counseling private practice in Gwinnett County. We serve children, teens, and adults. Supporting others as they seek clarity, peace, and growth through therapy. Our approach is not focused on what’s “wrong” with our clients. We believe in empowering them to use their strengths to resolve life challenges. We don’t just sit with a clipboard and pen – we also get out in the community spreading awareness and giving a friendly face to what it looks like to get help. Mental Health is not just an occupation to us – it’s our passion!

In addition to therapy, HTC also serves as an internship site for master’s level students as they prepare to enter the counseling field. I don’t look down on students or shy away from hiring them, I think of it as an opportunity to get to be a part of the next generation of counseling professionals!

When I think about what I am most proud of is that this practice was built on the word of mouth referrals from parents, coworkers, friends, and neighbors. They believe in Helpful Therapy Center and trusted us enough to share us.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Don’t fall for the hustle culture, y’all! There are so many ways to make money but you also have to make memories!!! So we can remind ourselves that even on our worst day – we are so lucky to be here…in life.
