Today we’d like to introduce you to Ciara King.
Ciara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for design started at a young age, but at the time, it was for fashion. I’d spend hours in my bedroom as a kid sewing random outfits together, making mood boards, and coming up with clothing line ideas. This desire to create clothing went on into my young adulthood. I even got as far as starting to build a toddler clothing line, but before launching it, I felt that something was missing. Although I loved clothing design (and still do), I wanted to build a business that would have a lasting impact on the individuals I helped.
Interior design was always a passion of mine—the kind everyone said I should make a career of. I’ve always cared about how my home looked and understood the impact a well-designed home can have on both the individuals who lived there and the ones welcomed in. I wanted to be the one who created welcoming spaces for your guests and a home for your family.
I decided it was time to turn my interior design passion into a career. I knew I needed to learn the ins and outs of the industry since I was starting this new career path from scratch. I sent an email to every interior design studio I could find on my Google search. I received one response from a local interior design studio that, coincidentally, was seeking an interior design assistant. She taught me everything about the industry, and I’ll forever be grateful for her willingness to teach me.
After my work as an assistant, I spent several years working as a remote interior designer, where I helped hundreds of individuals and families design their homes. Eventually, I decided to start my own business, and I’ve been designing spaces that make people feel happy and comfortable through E-Designs!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it has been an exciting one!
One of the challenges involved was marketing to a new clientele after working with clients from other companies. I want to reach the clients who will benefit most from my services, but when you’re a newer business, it can be hard to trump the businesses that have been in the game for decades.
Another challenge was pricing my services for what they were worth vs. what I thought potential clients wanted to pay. I even had a client tell me I needed to charge more for my services—that was a wake-up call!
