Inspiring Conversations with Dacia Carroll of Dacia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dacia Carroll

Hi Dacia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out working as a hairstylist when I was 18. I spent about a decade working behind the chair, working in editorials/NYFW/film/commercial work. A few seasons ago, I was trying to find a headband to wear for a holiday party. I had scoured the internet trying to find the right headband. Classic, elegant and understated. I had a tough time finding one and so I made my own from some decorative ribbon packaging. I felt that there was something missing on the market for those who didn’t want to be overly girly and decadent but still appreciated a beautiful headband that could work for different occasions. From there, the seed was planted and I started designing headbands for the women I had in mind.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, not at all. Being naive, I thought finding a manufacturer would be easy based on all the podcasts I listened to. Well, it wasn’t. Many manufacturers didn’t want to work with someone who wasn’t already in the industry, or they might not have had the necessary machinery for my design. What made it even harder was that I wasn’t working with a generic design and simply adding a logo. It took much more work and time—lots of prototyping, receiving samples, reviewing them, sending them back, and starting the cycle again. I live by the mantra, “Nothing worth having comes easy,” and I believe that building something you’re proud of requires a lot of effort.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dacia?
We design thoughtful hair accessories for both style and function. The majority of silk headbands on the market are meant for nightwear. Our headbands are made from 100% silk and are designed for all-day wear. We make all our headbands in NYC, and we also offer an assortment of colors hand-dyed in California. My background is in hairstyling, so I understand what makes a headband comfortable and why it is important to use quality fabric on the hair. I am proud that we have designed a product that is not only safe for all hair types but also comfortable to wear all day long, aka no pinching.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
This business was started during COVID while I was pregnant with my first child and launched while I was pregnant with my second daughter. It’s been a labor of love. If this inspires other readers to pursue entrepreneurial aspirations, I am all for it.
