Inspiring Conversations with Da’Kari Spears of 7 Days

Today we’d like to introduce you to Da’Kari Spears.

Da’Kari, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was raised in Portland, Oregon to a mother and father whom did what they had to in order to create a better life for me. I was raised by straight hustlers, the real ones! I was attended a predominantly white school and graduated. I was awarded a full-ride scholarship to the University of Oregon. A young black woman, being in classes that were filled with all white faces was nothing new to me, but developing into a strong black woman comfortable in my identity was a challenge. I have fought depression and hate from the world around me. I knew that I wanted more than just the career choices my degree had to offer, I knew that my parents had created generational wealth without degrees and on their own two feet, and I knew I had been given the life I had to further and legitimize that wealth. I had always had a sensitive lady part, and I have always had to be very cautious with it. In 2019, I learned that our intimates such as panties, men’s underwear, lingerie, swimsuits, etc. are not only supposed to be watched separately but they should not be washed in regular detergent as it is too harsh and strips these intimates of the healthy bacteria. Washing these garments with regular clothes also leaves them at risk of spreading outside germs including COVID-19 onto these garments and directly onto our most sensitive areas. I came up with 7 DAYS and all-natural undergarment wash that not only cleans intimates but protects them. It even saves you money because it preserves the life of these garments so that we are not having to replace them every 3-6 months, but instead every 6-12 months,

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Struggles along the way has definitely been trying to find myself and my own identity while pursuing my bachelor’s degree at the University of Oregon. There were are not taught the importance of entrepreneurship. There are classes on it, but these classes do not highlight the diversity within the world of entrepreneurship. Like I have stated before, I have fought against depression and a mental break due to personal life issues. But I somehow someway pushed through it. My parents also wanting so badly for me to get a corporate or hospital career, they were afraid of me experiencing the trials and tribulations of entrepreneurship. Which is understandable, all active parents have fears especially when they recall the things they went through in their own experiences. So they were not as supportive or encouraging as I would have wished them to be. But I brought home my degree and right after college, I jumped directly into launching my business. They have grown to have more faith as time goes on.

Recently actually, I lost one of my biggest supporters, my bestfriend and ex-boyfriend was killed last month and it has been harder than I ever could have imagined. But knowing how proud he was of me gives me another reason to keep going.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
7 DAYS was created in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, It was created in order to bring awareness to the importance of separating intimates from regular loads of laundry, all while promoting the health of our bodies. We specialize in an all-natural laundry soap specifically formulated for intimates such as panties, lingerie, swimwear, etc. What sets us apart is our all natural formula, our ingredients are gentle enough to be used on all baby laundry yet strong enough to give intimates the clean they truly need. I am most proud of bringing something fresh and new to the small business scene. This is not a product many of have heard of or even knew they needed! Therefore this is not a product you will find a million small businesses launching. I want readers to know that I am a young woman who took the initiative to research the importance of this. I am a young woman who identified a problem within society during a worldwide pandemic and created her very own all-natural solution to that problem.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always active running track, cheerleading, playing soccer, volleyball, and even basketball. I have always loved nature and exploring places. I have always been a shy girl, which I am still growing out of. But I have always been intrigued by independent women and the success of them. One of my favorite books growing up was a book called “Material Girl” by Keisha Ervin, the main character was well off until she wasn’t and had to create her own success in which she did. I have always said no matter what my parents have, I do not have anything until I have gotten it myself! That is something I have lived by since I was a little girl. I spent a couple of years living in Ft. Worth, Texas with my auntie and two brothers. There is where life changed for me. It wasn’t all white picket fences. I had to survive in a whole new community of people. I was bullied and walked over at first. Until one day, my auntie told me she wasn’t letting me back into the house until I stood up for myself. Long story short, after that day the bullies were taking orders from little ole me, lol.
