Inspiring Conversations with Deborah Houston of Inner Perspective Coaching

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Houston.

Hi Deborah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Deborah Houston, wife, mom, certified life and breakup recovery coach. As a divorcee, I thought everything I learned throughout my 17-year marriage was all I needed to know about relationships. To me, I was going to get it right, next time.

Next time, I chose older, successful but, as it turned out, I was in love with a man who could not fully love, commit, or value me. He lacked those things within himself. Cheating was a coping mechanism to mask his depression because the attention gave him attention.

I carried the load…it must be me. I was obsessed with, “what’s wrong with me?” I crushed my confidence, created trust issues, and became emotionally disconnected. This breakup was painful, as it happened just two years after losing my twenty-year-old son in a car accident. It felt like I was healing two wounds at the same time. I needed help. My internal environment was burning down.

So many damaging emotions tied to how I saw myself – not how I saw him. The image staring back at me in the mirror looked lost. If she was lost, it meant I was lost, because that was me. I lacked self-confidence, values, self-care, and where was my identity?

The value in the help I sought brought me from a state of brokenness to a state of wholeness. My true essence was being authentic, wholesome, empathetic, and compassionate. It has now been seven years since meeting the love of my life and marrying him at my dream wedding. Today, I know who I am, and stay true to myself.

Embracing my life purpose, I now help others find their starting point and rebuild after a breakup. I know how hard it is to feel broken and alone. Truth is, you’re neither broken nor alone. The intimate journey I take my clients through opens up a world to their true identity where they feel confident, safe, and completely fulfilled. Doubting themselves and what someone else thinks of them is a thing of the past.

A year after earning my certification and doing general life coaching, I started Inner Perspective Coaching which focuses on how changing your inner perspective – changes the rest of your story. I created a beautiful life from the pain.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a completely smooth road, as I have had to relive some of the most painful experiences of my life in order to help so many others. It was hard at first, but the biggest lesson learned is that healed people – heal people.

I spent hundreds of hours studying how some people get past life’s biggest heartaches, and some don’t. Those willing to face their pain and grief, are the ones that successfully navigate their way back to a life that is fulfilled. Heartbreak does not affect everyone the same, but healing can benefit each of us willing to reach out for it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Inner Perspective Coaching is special to me because it was given to me one night in a dream. A person’s inner perspective is the key to changing life as they know it. We all carry the potential to create a life by design. As a breakup coach, adults that work with me find comfort in being able to heal, regain a sense of self, practice self-love, compassion, and develop a vision of their new ideal relationship. It doesn’t always look like what you thought.

I’m known for serving from my heart, and making clients feel safe, heard, and understood without sugarcoating the truth, and letting them believe their own BS. Men especially, often admit the things they share with me; they’ve never shared with anyone. In our sessions, I focus more on the client feeling complete than cutting a call off at the top of the hour.

I’m most proud of the system I have in place…The Oyster’s Shell (Turning Pain into Pearls). When something infiltrates the oyster and causes it a great amount of pain, the pain doesn’t kill it. Instead, it’s able to coat the source of the pain until beautiful pearls form. My services consist of working 1:1 with me for 90 days. We spend an hour together each week, creating breakthroughs, and new insights that are filled with aha moments and if support is needed between sessions they have access to me via email, messenger and Instagram chats. We cover the top 5 areas that are necessary for lasting change. My own detailed workbook is provided for guidance and understanding.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My amazing husband, Derrick Houston gets credit for always believing in me and not allowing me to give up. I’ve worked so hard in putting this together, and he has encouraged me throughout. It was him who would not let me have my Business degree from the University of West Georgia simply mailed to me after working very hard to earn it. I needed to walk across that stage and feel the journey I had completed. Thank you, honey.

My twins Skylar and Taylor, who are always telling me they are proud of me. I’m proud of you two also. Love you to the moon and back.

My two amazing coaches believed in me, encouraged me, and shoved me out of my comfort zone so that I could reach my full potential. For that, I want to thank Vanda Harries, The Life Architect, and Jesse Shan, The Leaders Coach. Thank you both immensely.

Each client I’ve worked with so far has been amazing and put forth the effort to make real changes. I will always work as hard as I have to for each of you.
