Today we’d like to introduce you to Delandra Vinson.
Hi Delandra, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My first adult career was as a financial analyst, now I’m a midwife and I own a doula agency! I’m originally from Atlanta, and graduated from FAMU in 2003 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. My first job after college was here in Atlanta (sweet!) but I soon learned the cubicle life was not for me. Giving birth to my first child sparked my passion for childbirth. Soon after she was born, I became a certified labor doula. Five years into doula work, I was able to leave my ‘day job’. My side hustle became my main hustle! In 2016, I was given the opportunity to buy the largest doula agency in Atlanta, Labor of Love Doula & Childbirth Services. Doula work and running the company have been amazing experiences, but in 2019 I decided to ‘level up’ yet again and pursue a midwifery degree. I’m extremely excited about opening my home birth practice next year!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been smooth but the pathway has definitely not been straight! I’ve been incredibly blessed that my entrepreneurial venture has always never failed to provide for my family. Business ownership and birth work has been hard work, lots of sleepless nights, a to-do list that never ends, but I see areas of growth every year and I wouldn’t trade it for a thing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Labor of Love Doula & Childbirth Services, Inc.?
Labor of Love is an African American, woman-owned childbirth services agency. My doulas share the common goals of improving maternal and fetal birth outcomes and encouraging a gentle birth experience. We teach childbirth classes, provide labor and postpartum doula support and placenta encapsulation services. In 2022, midwifery care will officially be added to the lineup.
Labor of Love has been established for over 21 years. Our brand is well-engrained in the obstetric, holistic health and birth community. Over the years we have the honor of serving over 4500 families across metro Atlanta and central Georgia!
What were you like growing up?
I was a quiet child who excelled academically. As I got older, I embraced leadership opportunities and participated in community service activities. In high school, I was in the Drama Club, National Honor Society and I was Captain of the majorette squad.
