Inspiring Conversations with Destiny Murray of Señorita Boñita Cosmetics

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Murray.

Hi Destiny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Señorita Boñita Cosmetics in 2020 while working from home during the pandemic. I wanted a creative outlet badly; I wanted to share something of value with the world. I remember asking my mom, sister, and daughter about business ideas. Instead of choosing between two of my favorite things, I chose them both: African waist beads and cosmetics. What felt like the next day, I began researching how to start businesses, designing the brand, and studying other business owners. I knew I wanted to help women, girls, and all genders feel and look beautiful but I also knew that I needed to create a legit business before embarking on the journey.

Growing my business has required me to adopt this belief and affirmation: “I’ll win if I don’t quit”. My business has grown and I’ve grown as a business owner because I refuse to quit. I will research an answer or strategy, call a mentor, listen to a podcast, or take a break before I ever quit. I’ve learned to prioritize self-care, ask for help when needed, and be okay with not knowing it all. I’m still a student; I make mistakes, I sometimes miss reaching my goals, I fail at things all of the time, but I grow through it all and I don’t quit.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles along the way has been outgrowing spaces, working too hard, and realizing that I can’t do it all by myself. At first, I began my business in my spare bedroom and then moved to a garage (yes! My parent’s garage). Then, I needed space for custom fitting and in-person shopping so I moved to my mentor’s hair salon. At some point, I had to level up the fitting and shopping experience so I designed The Pretty Palace (a bigger spare bedroom than the first one). I’m realizing that you have to be prepared for when it’s time to increase and improve your space for customers.

Also, I’ve learned to implement systems to help me work less hard. In the beginning, I sold products in my DMs and I scheduled fittings in my DMs. It was hard responding to messages, staying organized, taking and sending pictures of specific waist beads, answering questions, and the list goes on. Now, I have a website where customers can shop and book fittings. I even pay for app embedded in my website that has my availability calendar so it’s super easy for customers to book now.

The big one is realizing I can’t do it all on my own; I need help. For events, I’ve had friends help me. To get good photos and videos, I’ve had my cousin come with his nice, fancy camera so that I could focus on my customers. My dad will take orders to the post office for me and my daughter will stuff organza bags with orders and business cards. I realize now that I need a team; it truly takes a village to make this all work.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
