Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Marita Kinney
Hi Dr. Marita, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Writing became my lifeline—the very thing that pulled me from the depths of unimaginable pain. My world shattered when my brother, Westley, was killed. Just months later, my father, Bishop Dr. Westley C. Robinson, passed away from renal failure. The grief was unbearable. My faith, which had always been my foundation, felt distant. I was lost, drowning in sorrow, and desperate for relief.
In my desperation, I turned to journaling. I poured my pain onto the pages, not realizing that I was stitching my heart back together with every word. I had no intention of writing a book—I was simply trying to survive. But God had other plans.
One day, my co-worker, Brenda Cobb, asked if she could read what I had been writing instead of going to lunch. Hesitant but trusting her, I handed her my journal. When she finished reading, she looked at me with tears in her eyes and said, “Your words are so powerful. You should turn this into a book.”
At that moment, something shifted inside me. A seed was planted—one that I never could have imagined would grow into the purpose that fuels me today.
I took a leap of faith and published The Unspoken Walk. That book wasn’t just a collection of words; it was my healing, my testimony, my way of turning pain into purpose. And from that one book, a new chapter in my life began.
I discovered that writing wasn’t just for me—it was a tool to inspire, uplift, and transform others. That revelation led me to start Pure Thoughts Publishing, where I’ve had the privilege of coaching thousands of authors, helping them turn their pain, passion, and purpose into books that impact lives.
My journey has been a testament to the power of resilience, faith, and obedience to God’s call. I went from feeling helpless in my grief to empowering others worldwide. I learned that even in our darkest moments, purpose is waiting to be discovered. What started as a cry for help in my journal became a voice of hope for so many others.
And to think—it all began with one simple suggestion. One person saw something in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself. Sometimes, all it takes is one seed to grow into a legacy of impact.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was far from a smooth road. When I started, being an author wasn’t as popular or accessible as it is today. I didn’t know a single person who had written a book, let alone someone who was a life coach. I had no blueprint, no mentor—just a deep desire to heal and a willingness to take the next step, even when I couldn’t see the whole path.
Ironically, I had hated reading as a child. It always felt like an uphill battle, something I had to force myself through rather than enjoy. But in my deepest pain, I made a commitment to myself: I would write my way through my healing, no matter how difficult it was. Little did I know, my struggle with reading had a reason. Years later, I discovered that I was dyslexic.
That revelation explained so much. The challenges I had faced, the moments I had felt inadequate—all of it made sense. But instead of allowing it to limit me, I used it as fuel. I refused to let a diagnosis define me. I had already written books, built a business, and helped countless others step into their purpose—without even knowing the obstacles I had overcome.
And that’s the beauty of the journey. Sometimes, we are already walking in purpose before we even recognize what it is. When I started helping others turn their pain into purpose, I didn’t know it was called coaching. I was simply doing what felt natural—guiding, encouraging, and believing in people the way I wished someone had done for me.
Every struggle, every setback, and every moment of doubt only made me stronger. I’ve learned that the road doesn’t have to be smooth for you to reach your destination. You just have to be willing to keep walking.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Healing Through Words. Transforming Lives. Elevating Purpose.
My journey began in pain, but it led me to purpose. Pure Thoughts Publishing & Wellness was birthed from a place of healing—first my own, and then the thousands of people I’ve had the privilege to guide. What started as journaling through my grief has grown into a global movement, empowering individuals to tell their stories, build their legacies, and transform their lives from the inside out.
What We Do & Specialize In
At Pure Thoughts Publishing, we do more than publish books—we give voices to the unheard, courage to the broken, and clarity to those ready to step into their greatness. We provide full-service publishing, book coaching, and author branding to help individuals bring their stories to life in a way that leaves a lasting impact.
But my mission extends beyond publishing. My life coaching practice focuses on wellness, personal growth, executive leadership, and professional development. Whether I’m working with a grieving heart in need of healing, an entrepreneur searching for clarity, or an executive stepping into greater leadership, my coaching is designed to ignite purpose, unlock potential, and create lasting transformation.
What Sets Us Apart
The difference? We don’t just focus on success—we focus on the whole person. True success begins with inner alignment. That’s why everything I do, whether publishing a book or coaching a leader, is rooted in helping individuals heal, grow, and thrive.
Most publishing companies will help you write a book, but Pure Thoughts Publishing & Wellness helps you write a book that changes lives—including your own. Most coaching programs focus on quick strategies, but my approach is holistic and transformational. Whether in grief recovery, leadership development, or business strategy, my mission is to help you not just reach your goals but become the person who is ready to receive them.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
One of the greatest risks I’ve ever taken is simply being authentic in a world that thrives on conformity. In a society where everyone has an opinion and judgment is often louder than encouragement, it’s easy to shrink back, to second-guess yourself, to seek approval before moving forward. But I learned early on that the need for validation is a trap—and I refuse to be trapped.
I don’t measure my success by whether people agree with me, accept me, or even understand me. My confidence doesn’t come from the approval of others—it comes from within, from knowing that my purpose is greater than their opinions. That’s what gives me the boldness to take risks, to step into uncharted territory, and to build something meaningful, even when the path isn’t clear.
Who cares about rejection when you have no desire to fit in? I’m not here to blend in—I’m here to make an impact. Every risk I’ve taken, from launching a business to sharing my story to stepping into leadership, has been rooted in one truth: I trust the calling on my life more than I fear the judgment of others.
Risk isn’t about recklessness; it’s about faith, courage, and conviction. It’s about betting on yourself, believing in your vision, and refusing to let fear dictate your future. The greatest breakthroughs don’t come from playing it safe—they come from stepping boldly into the unknown, knowing that even if you fail, you are still moving forward.
So, to anyone hesitating because of fear, doubt, or the opinions of others—I encourage you to take the risk. Be bold. Be authentic. Be unapologetic about your purpose. Because the real risk? Is never stepping into the greatness that was meant for you.
