Today we’d like to introduce you to Frieda Kay.
Hi Frieda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing hair since I was 11 years old. Well, actually it started when I was around five years old. My mom would relax my hair, I would take the remainder of the relaxer in my baby doll’s hair. It was just the cutest thing. Once I got to the middle school my friend’s mom seen some micro braids I installed in my hair and wanted me to service her the same way. Throughout middle school and high school, I was known as the girl who was always braiding in the gymnasium. Years had passed and I only braided every now and then and never saw it going no further because I really wanted to be a social worker. But God had other plans for my life.
By 27, I was married with six children and I knew it was time for me to choose my talent and maximize it to the next level. I uprooted my family and moved to Atlanta, Ga to learn from some of the best stylists. I lived there for three years and had to move back home abruptly and my life changed forever. It all started with one post on Facebook saying I was doing rope twist for $100 and I got booked up so quickly that I was able to settle in comfortably. I had branded my work and called it FreeKay Styles. Everything was going great and the pandemic hit. They had closed all salons during the pandemic but because I worked from home, I took advantage and kept working. I still had to do my part at home and wasn’t going to risk losing my home because of some mandate. During that time, I had clients coming from everywhere because no matter what women need their hair done. I also even started my own hair care line called FreeKay’s Natural Way. Locs started becoming more and more in high demand and I started making Loc Extensions, reconstructing Locs and went viral. I was featured in Lovin Locs Magazine Limited Edition, Davidson Local and a couple of other magazines. FreeKay Styles was invited to style hair of models in the Honey Baby Designs Fashion Show in Charlotte, NC. With all the exposure from the fashion shows and magazine articles, I was becoming highly recommended. At that moment, I was still working from home when I received a call that a space was available. Immediately after seeing the space, I signed the lease and opened the doors to my shop on October 2, 2021. This last year, I’ve traveled to a few states to advance in the hair industry. I was sought out to be on a series on Snapchat called The Humanity. Currently, I’m running my own salon, a majorette dance team and I teach natural hair care at Lexington Middle School Connect21 After-school program in Lexington, NC.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, with me, anything I do comes with a struggle. Nothing has ever came easy to me but I worked my tail off to get to where I am today. One of the major struggles I had to overcome is not receiving the support from people that I thought was really rooting for me. People would talk that talk but never show up and it affected me in many areas. Trying to keep my head up and stay focused when all the decks was stacked against you was the tear-jerker for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I have a natural hair salon in Lexington, NC. I have the only black-owned business in the industrial park. In my salon, you can receive all kinds of services pertaining to your hair. Services from Steam Treatment, Hydration Treatment, Feed-in Braids, Loc Extensions, Loc Retwist and Loc Repair and maintenance.
I am known for my Locs and how I can transform you them from a rugged state to clean and neat.
My transparency sets me apart from the rest. When it comes to my life, struggles and accomplishments, I have no problem speaking on it. I am confident in my work that it actually speaks for itself. I’m the type of stylist that will tell you straight up that I can/can’t do a particular service.
I am most proud of my hair care line FreeKay’s Natural Way. I say in my kitchen for months formulating the perfect line for all-natural hair needs. We offer hair growth oil, daily hair moisturizer, hydration spray, rose water and many more.
