Inspiring Conversations with Gloria Schulz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Schulz.

Hi Gloria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Over eight years ago, I helped my daughter plan her wedding with the help of a wedding planner. At the time, my daughter lived in Chicago and the wedding was to be held in Atlanta. I enjoyed the process and was happy to help her. After her wedding, the wedding planner contacted me and told me since I was so organized and detailed, she wanted me to come to work for her. I was not expecting this but was thrilled at the idea. I began as her right-hand coordinator on the wedding days and eventually helped her with office work with the vendors and clients for four years.

One day I received a call from a Mother of the Bride asking me to help plan her daughter’s wedding. I told her that the planner I worked for could do it, but she insisted on having me do it. So I started my own business to help her. I made a website and started an Instagram account and that is how Gloria Schulz Events was born in 2019.

Since 2019 my team has grown to over 15 Associate and Lead Day of Coordinators. We are a custom coordination and wedding planning company serving the Atlanta area and the 30a area of Florida. With a strong emphasis on customized and personalized service, our company has seen tremendous success in the past few years, Creating strong relationships with our vendors and clients has been the key to our growth.

I have been a guest on The Shine Podcast and Meet the Elite Podcast. I am currently serving on the Atlanta WIPA (Wedding Industry Professionals Association) Board of Directors as the Programs Director and previously served on the Board as the Secretary for two years. I have been a guest speaker at Blessed Trinity High School Career Day as well as an online panelist for Meghan Gillikin of the Planner’s Vault/Weddings For Real Podcast and Sam Jacobson of Ideaction/Own Your Business Podcast. I am also a featured contributor in the 2023 Atlanta Style Wedding Magazine. Gloria Schulz Events has been published in Style Me Pretty and Hey Wedding Lady. Gloria Schulz Events has been also awarded The Knot Best of Weddings for 2022 and 2023 and Wedding Wire Couples’ Choice Awards for 2023 and 2023.

Grateful for the wonderful team we have and for our clients and vendors, I am extremely fortunate to have started a second career as a wedding planner. I love serving people and I love to help people. This is the perfect job for me and I am very thankful for the opportunities that I have had in the wedding industry during these last eight years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business in 2019 was good. Having a pandemic hit in 2020 was not so good. I was very fortunate that I had three of my scheduled weddings before the world shut down. But I still had other weddings planned that year. So I had to learn to adapt and adjust and create plan B for these weddings. Some venues shut down and we had to move the wedding to the home of the bride, one church enforced the wearing of masks about a month before the wedding so we had to move the ceremony to the venue, one wedding had only 34 attend at their wedding. Was it stressful, yes very.

I spent a lot of time on the phone calling my vendors to see if they were okay! I spent time speaking with all of my clients to tell them I wish I had a crystal ball to know if we could proceed as planned. We were not in control of anything.

I spent a lot of time reworking my website during those days and realized that I needed to hire a professional to do it. It cost a lot of money, money that I didn’t have yet, but today it has paid off tremendously. The DIY website is gone replaced by one that speaks to my ideal client and does the heavy lifting for me and sends me inquiries weekly. I joined The Planner’s Vault which opened in February 2020 and this community provided me with information and advice during the pandemic. This was a huge help as well during a very turbulent time.

Having a business is a lot of work. Learning all of the CEO tasks that need to be done, booking clients, social media, and of course planning weddings and bringing them to life on the wedding day. But it is all worth it because the moment I see my client walk down that aisle to marry the love of their life, I cry and say to myself, “I did this, I brought this all together”.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
